
Mountaineers Complete Reverse Sweep Over Houston in Five-Set Thriller

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team (14–7, 2–7 Big 12) rallied from a two-set deficit to defeat Houston (8–13, 1–9 Big 12) in a five-set contest Thursday evening inside Hope Coliseum. The match concluded with set scores of 22–25, 20–25, 25–20, 25–22, and 15–7.
Despite dropping the first two frames, the Mountaineers maintained offensive pressure, recording 14 kills on a .140 hitting percentage in Set 1 and 13 kills at a .195 clip in Set 2. West Virginia responded with a surge in Set 3, posting 16 kills and hitting .361 to stay alive. The momentum continued in Set 4 with 15 kills on a .262 efficiency, setting the stage for a decisive fifth set. WVU closed out the match with authority, registering seven kills on a .500 hitting percentage to complete the reverse sweep.
West Virginia finished the night with 65 kills on 176 attempts, hitting .256 overall. The offense was paced by 64 assists and 7 service aces, while the defense contributed 63 digs and 10 total blocks, including one solo block and 18 block assists.
Junior outside hitter Nina Horning led all players with a match-high 22 kills and 24 total points, marking her fourth double-double of the season and third consecutive. She added 17 digs, three total blocks, and three assists.
Redshirt junior right side hitter Trinity Sheridan followed with 14 kills, four digs, and two total blocks for 15 points.
Junior middle blocker Maddy McGath was highly efficient, hitting .450 with 11 kills and two blocks for 12 points. Senior middle blocker Laila Ibrahim added nine kills on a .400 clip and led all players with seven total blocks, finishing with 12.5 points. Sophomore outside hitter Maggie Elliott contributed six kills and three digs, while senior middle blocker Chalina Lederer added one kill and two blocks.
Redshirt junior setter Alexis Finnvold directed the offense with a match-high 38 assists and added six service aces—her third consecutive match with five or more aces. She also contributed nine digs and three blocks for 9.5 points.
Senior libero LonDynn Betts anchored the back row with 16 digs and one assist. Sophomore defensive specialist Eily Painter added five digs and two assists, while freshman setter Sarah Pfiffner chipped in 11 assists and two digs.
West Virginia returns to action Saturday, Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. ET to host No. 14 Kansas inside Hope Coliseum. The match will feature Youth Day and a Gold Rush promotion.
