MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 5 West Virginia University men's soccer team welcomes in-state rival and top-ranked Marshall to Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium for the Mountain State Derby on Wednesday evening. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
 
It is a gold rush game with fans receiving a gold shaker giveaway along with the first 750 fans getting a special edition Mountain State Derby poster. The matchup will be sponsored by The Thrasher Group.
 
The contest is sold out to the general public while students can still get in for free with a valid WVU Student I.D. There will be additional seating on each side of the main stands along with standing room only sections on the grass next to each goal to accommodate the expected large crowd. Stadium gates will open at 6 p.m. on game day.
 
Nick Farrell and Adam Zundell will have the call of Wednesday's contest on ESPN+. The game also can be heard on 91.7 FM (WWVU) in Morgantown, and live stats are available at WVUsports.com.
 
West Virginia enters the game with an unbeaten record of 9-0-4 after a 3-2 victory on the road at South Carolina last Thursday. The 13-match unbeaten streak is the longest for WVU to begin a season and the second-longest in program history after a 17-match streak over the course of the 1967-68 seasons.
 
Senior Luke McCormick, sophomore Marcus Caldeira, and senior Yutaro Tsukada all scored for the Mountaineers against South Carolina while senior Sergio Ors Navarro tallied an assist.
 
Since 2006, the Mountaineers are 17-13-2 against ranked opponents in Morgantown, including a win over then No. 3 Portland earlier this year. That record includes two wins over No. 1 teams – UConn in both 2007 and 2011.
 
Marshall enters the contest ranked No. 1 in the country with a perfect 12-0-0 record and are led by seventh-year head coach Chris Grassie, who is 79-32-17 during his time in Huntington, which also includes the 2020-21 National Championship.
 
The Thundering Herd are the top scoring offense in the country, averaging 3.17 goals per game while also limiting opponents to just 0.42 goals per contest, third lowest in the nation.
 
This will be the fifth straight game in the series that Marshall has been ranked as well as the second time in three years that both teams have been in the top 10.
