No. 6 WVU Wins Season Opener

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 6-ranked West Virginia University men's soccer team opened the 2022 season with a 1-0 win over Robert Morris on Thursday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The Mountaineers (1-0) used a 36th-minute goal to earn the victory. After senior midfielder Luke McCormick got WVU into attacking position, junior midfielder Yutaro Tsukada, who was one of five West Virginia debutants to play in the match, fired a shot off the crossbar and the RMU goalkeeper.
The tally was scored as an own goal.
WVU outshot the Colonials, 8-2, in the win, including 4-1 in shots on goal. Both squads finished with one corner kick.
Redshirt senior midfielder/defender Dyon Dromers led the Mountaineers with a pair of shots – both of them on goal – while junior goalkeeper Jackson Lee made one save on his way to his first career victory at West Virginia.
With the win, WVU has now won six consecutive season openers, dating back to the 2017 season. It also improved to 36-21-5 in lid-lifters all time.
The win also moved coach Dan Stratford to 11-1-5 in nonconference action at WVU. Of note, Thursday's result secured Stratford's 100th win in association with West Virginia men's soccer. He won 54 matches as a player from 2004-07, 27 as an assistant coach from 2011-13, and 19 as the program's current head coach.
WVU moved to 15-6 against Robert Morris, including 10-3 in Morgantown. Additionally, the Mountaineers have now won 10 consecutive matches against RMU.
Up next, WVU hits the road for the first time this season with the renewal of the Backyard Brawl on Monday, Aug. 29, at No. 7 Pitt. Kickoff at Ambrose Urbanic Field is set for 7 p.m. ET.
