Mountaineers Hit the Road to Take On No. 21 UNC Greensboro

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's soccer team hits the road for a matchup with No. 21 UNC Greensboro on Friday evening. Kickoff from UNCG Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m.

The Mountaineers are coming off a 1-0 victory over St. Bonaventure on Monday with sophomore Julen Recalde scoring the game-winning goal. Sophomore Sammie Walker and graduate student Aurélien Cormier each picked up assists while redshirt sophomore Toby Mawer made two saves to secure the shutout.
Overall, WVU is 1-1-0 this season and are coming off a 13-5-3 season and their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance. In the Sun Belt Preseason Coaches Poll, WVU was picked to win the league, the first time the Mountaineers are preseason favorites since 2022.
Senior Pablo Pozos was named the 2026 Sun Belt Preseason Offensive Player of the Year after tallying 11 goals and three assists in his first season with the Mountaineers. Junior midfielders Isaac Scheer and Nacho Martinez joined Pozos on the Preseason All-Conference Team.
The Mountaineers return 15 players from last year's squad while adding 15 newcomers. Six players join WVU out of the transfer portal while there are nine first-year college players.
UNC Greensboro 1-0-1 this season with a win over VCU and draw against San Francisco. In the preseason coaches poll, UNCG was picked second, only behind 2025 national semifinalist Furman.
Forward Steven Hernandez, defender Mohammed Sumaila, and goalkeeper Seth Wilson were all named to the SoCon Preseason Men's Soccer All-Conference Team.
