Mountaineers Fall in Backyard Brawl

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The No. 6-ranked West Virginia University men's soccer team fell at No. 7 Pitt, 3-0, on Monday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
Three, first-half goals by the hosts hurt WVU in the 51st edition of the Backyard Brawl. Pitt (2-0) opened the scoring in the 12th minute before finding the back of the net again in the 17th and 30th minute of play.
Despite the score line, the Mountaineers (1-1) had their chances. The squad finished with five shots on goal, including two by junior midfielder Ryan Crooks. In all, Pitt held a 13-10 advantage in shots. West Virginia, meanwhile, finished with a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.
Along with Crooks, senior midfielder Luke McCormick tallied a team-leading three shots, with one on frame. In goal, junior goalkeeper Jackson Lee made three saves.
With the loss, WVU fell to 35-11-5 against the Panthers in the all-time series, including 16-7-2 in Pittsburgh. Additionally, Monday's loss was just the Mountaineers' second in their last 14 meetings with the Panthers.
Up next, the Mountaineers continue their two-match road trip on Friday, Sept. 2, at No. 21 Penn State. Kickoff at Jeffrey Field in University Park, Pennsylvania, is set for 7 p.m. ET.
