Mountaineers Host Penguins Tuesday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team returns home for a midweek matchup against Youngstown State on Tuesday, March 19, at 3 p.m. ET, at Monongalia County Ballpark.

The Mountaineers (12-7) have won seven of their last nine games after a series win at William & Mary. A 9-1 win on Saturday was the 200th of coach Randy Mazey's WVU career. Mazey is 201-161 in seven years at West Virginia and is the fifth-winningest coach in program history.
The Penguins (1-17) opened Horizon League play with three losses at Northern Kentucky over the weekend. YSU has not played a home game, and opened the year with six consecutive games at top-10 opponents.
Junior left-hander Nick Snyder (2-1, 2.84 ERA) will make his fourth midweek start for WVU and will face sophomore righty Chad Coles (0-3, 15.19).
Statistically, the Mountaineers are No. 8 in the country with 47 stolen bases, No. 15 with 18 double plays turned and No. 17 with 6.76 hits allowed per nine innings. Additionally, West Virginia is second in the Big 12 Conference with 20 home runs and 9.8 strikeouts per nine innings, while WVU is third in ERA (3.08) and WHIP (1.24).
Junior center fielder Brandon White is No. 9 nationally with 14 stolen bases and junior right-hander Alek Manoah ranks No. 12 in the NCAA with 45 strikeouts. Additionally, senior right fielder Darius Hill and sophomore second baseman Tyler Doanes are second in the Big 12 with two triples.

The Penguins opened the year with six consecutive games at top-10 teams, three at No. 9 Mississippi State and three at No. 6 Florida State. YSU's lone win came last week at Pitt, before three losses this weekend at Northern Kentucky.
Phillip Glasser leads the team with a .244 batting average, while Jeff Wehler has 16 hits and Trevor Wiersma has 13 RBIs to pace the squad. On the mound, Brandon Matthews is 1-1 with a 2.61 ERA in 10.1 innings.
A Youngstown native, Dan Bertolini is in his third season at Youngstown State. Bertolini led the Penguins to an 18-38 record in 2018, YSU's most wins since 2010. Youngstown State also collected its first win at the Horizon League Tournament since winning the championship in 2014.

The Mountaineers are 21-6 overall and 15-6 at home against Youngstown State. The two teams last met in 2016, a 13-3 WVU win. In the victory, current senior Darius Hill had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored, while fellow senior Andrew Zitel drove in a pair of runs on one hit and added two walks.
LAST TIME OUT: ROAD SERIES WIN
West Virginia returns home after a series win at William & Mary this weekend. Due to rain in Williamsburg, Virginia, on Friday, the teams played a doubleheader on Saturday, March 16, where WVU won the opener, 9-1, before a 6-4 loss. On Sunday, the Mountaineers clinched the series with a 12-2 victory.

West Virginia begins Big 12 play this weekend at Baylor, from March 22-24. The series in Waco, Texas, begins on Friday, March 22, at 7:35 p.m. ET, and will air on FCS. WVU added a pair of home runs in the victory, including one by senior right fielder Darius Hill as part of a three-hit, three-RBI day.
- WVU split the doubleheader against the Tribe with a 6-4 loss in Saturday's second game. The Mountaineers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and led 4-1 in the middle of the sixth, but the Tribe rallied with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, two in the seventh and added another in the eighth.
- West Virginia won the series with a 12-2 victory on March 17 behind a season-high 12 runs and another strong start by junior right-hander Kade Strowd, who held William & Mary scoreless on just one hit in the first six innings. In 7.0 innings, Strowd gave up two runs on three hits with eight strikeouts and four walks. WVU scored double-digit runs for the first time this season and had 10 or more hits for the third consecutive game and the fifth time in the last seven contests, as nine Mountaineers, and all but one starter, had at least one hit, nine scored at least one run and six had one or more RBIs. West Virginia again hit two home runs, led by a three-run shot by junior first baseman Kevin Brophy as part of a four-RBI day.
