UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 9-ranked West Virginia University women's soccer team concludes its season-opening weekend against a first-time opponent, as the Mountaineers face Arkansas in the Penn State Invitational on Sunday, Aug. 19, at noon, at Jeffrey Field.
The Razorbacks (1-0) are the only first-time opponent on the Mountaineers' (0-1) 2018 schedule. Arkansas is the 110th different opponent WVU has faced in its 23-year history.
"I know Arkansas is going to be a tough SEC team, and they are going to bring an incredible game Sunday," Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "This is a huge game for us. We have to bounce back; there's no question about it. We are here to compete, and we are here to win. At this point, we have to have a short-term memory and make sure we are prepared to win Sunday."
The Mountaineers return to the field following a 1-0 defeat at the hands of No. 4-ranked Penn State on Aug. 17. Statistically the better team, WVU's strong defensive effort was spoiled by an unassisted goal from Shea Moyer in the 80th minute.
WVU finished the match with a 13-7 edge in shots and forced PSU's Amanda Dennis into five saves. Senior forward Sh'Nia Gordon paced the field with three shots, and five different Mountaineers registered a shot on-goal.
The Mountaineer defense denied the Nittany Lions a shot through the first 44 minutes of the match before junior goalkeeper Rylee Foster made the first of three saves. WVU also earned a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Razorbacks, the 2017 SEC Tournament runner-up and an NCAA Tournament qualifier, opened their 2018 season with a 1-0 victory over Duquesne on Aug. 17, at Jeffrey Field. Junior midfielder Kayla McKeon tallied the game-winner in the 37th minute, her 14th career goal.
For the first time in program history, Arkansas denied an opponent a look at the net, as the Dukes failed to register a shot. Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Harris earned credit for the clean sheet, the second of her career. The Razorbacks registered 10 shutouts in 2017.
