MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team rebounded after their first loss of the season on Saturday with a 14-7 victory over Kennesaw State, Sunday afternoon at Kendrick Family Ballpark. The Mountaineers improve to 14-1 while the Owls fall to 6-11.
Senior
Brodie Kresser, one day after breaking his nose, was back in the lineup and went 3-for-5 with a home run, four RBI, three runs, and two stolen bases. Junior
Sam White continued his torrid stretch with a pair of hits, including a home run, and three RBI. Senior
Grant Hussey added two hits and two RBI.
After the Owls scored three runs in the first, the Mountaineers responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning. White had the big hit, a three-run opposite field home run to even up the score before WVU recorded an out. Freshman
Gavin Kelly put the Mountaineers on top a few batters later with an RBI triple.
In the third, Kelly used his speed once again to score on a shallow sacrifice fly from redshirt junior
Chase Swain. West Virginia tacked on four more runs in the fifth as Hussey, Kresser, and junior
Logan Sauve all came through with two-out RBI base knocks.
Kelly showed off his wheels again in the eighth inning as he scored on a straight steal of home. Swain collected an RBI single a few pitches later before Kresser delivered the big blow, a three-run home run, his second of the season.
The Mountaineers will remain home for a midweek matchup with Towson on Tuesday with first pitch set for 2 p.m.
