Mountaineers Defeat Towson in Run-Rule Victory

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore Spencer Barnett hit two home runs, including a game-ending grand slam, on Tuesday afternoon as the West Virginia University baseball team defeated Towson, 16-5, in eight innings at Kendrick Family Ballpark. The Mountaineers improve to 15-1 on the season while the Tigers fall to 4-12.
In addition to Barnett's big day, freshman Gavin Kelly finished the game with two hits and three RBI. Juniors Skylar King and Ben Lumsden each drove in two runs while King also stole two bases, part of six on the day for the Mountaineers.
Ten different WVU pitchers saw action in the game. Sophomore Chase Meyer tossed two scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Junior Luke Lyman struck out three while junior Ben McDougal, redshirt freshman JJ Glascock, and freshman Mac Stiffler each had a pair of punchouts in scoreless innings of work. Freshman Tucker DeLisle also tossed a scoreless inning in his collegiate debut.
The Mountaineers jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the first, taking advantage of a couple of Tiger errors along with runs driven in by both Kelly and King.
In the second, WVU added three more runs on a double by senior Kyle West, bases-loaded walk to Kelly and another Towson error. In the fourth, Kelly knocked in a run with a double before coming around to score from second on a grounder to short as he was running on the pitch.
Barnett hit his first home run of the game in the seventh, an opposite-field solo shot, before ending the game via run rule with a grand slam in the eighth. It is the first multi-home run game for a Mountaineer this season.
West Virginia will be back in action on Friday for the start of a three-game series at Oklahoma State to open Big 12 play. First pitch from O'Brate Stadium in Stillwater is set for 7 p.m. ET.
