MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 21 West Virginia University wrestling team defeated American in its first dual action of the season, 32-6, on Saturday at Bender Arena in Washington, D.C.
West Virginia (1-0) improved to 6-2 all-time in season openers under head coach Tim Flynn since he took over in 2019. American's six points were the least amount of points scored against the Mountaineers since Glenville State scored three on Feb. 18, 2024.
Three wrestlers made their Mountaineer debuts as NC State transfer, redshirt sophomore Louie Gill, wrestled at 125 pounds, freshman Gunner Andrick wrestled at 133 pounds and freshman Brock Kehler wrestled at heavyweight.
Gill began the day with a tightly contested match with American's JJ Peace as he won by decision, 7-1, to put West Virginia ahead.
Following Gill, Andrick began his WVU career facing No. 26 Raymond Lopez at 133 pounds. Andrick scored an early takedown in the first period to lead, 3-1. An escape in the second period gave Andrick the three-point lead heading into the final frame.
Lopez went on to rally in the third period with two takedowns to win the match by decision, 8-5. For the only time during the match, the Mountaineers were tied with the Eagles, 3-3.
The Mountaineers quickly took control of the match as they won the next seven matches.
Redshirt freshman TJ Langley earned his first start in dual action at 149 pounds for the Mountaineers as he faced American's Gage Owen. An escape in the third period proved to be the difference as Langley won the match by decision, 2-0, due to riding time.
In his official return from an injury last season, redshirt sophomore No. 4 Ty Watters showed why he is ranked in the top-5 at 157 pounds in the country. Watters only scored one takedown in the first period, but swung the match in his favor in the second period with three takedowns and a reversal to lead, 14-4.
Watters went on to win the match by technical fall, 21-6.
Redshirt junior No. 18 Ian Bush earned an impressive ranked win as he defeated No. 28 Caleb Campos at 184 pounds by major decision, 11-2. Bush utilized three takedowns to separate from Campos in a dominant performance.
