Sunday's match marks just the third meeting all-time between West Virginia and Robert Morris. The Mountaineers hold a 2-0 lead in the series, which features one meeting in Morgantown and one in Pittsburgh. WVU and RMU met for the first time in the Mountaineers' inaugural season in 1996, with West Virginia securing a 5-0 lead in Morgantown on Sept. 11. In the following season, WVU once again claimed a 5-0 victory over RMU, this time in Pittsburgh on Oct. 21, 1997.
Last time out, WVU dropped a 3-1 contest at No. 12 Penn State in University Park, Pennsylvania, on Aug 29. The Nittany Lions found the back of the net in the 15th minute to take the lead, then added two more scores in the 23rd and 55th minutes. The Mountaineers got on the board in the 90th minute on a goal from junior forward Ajanae Respass following a well-placed corner kick from senior forward Dilary Heredia-Beltran. However, it wasn't enough as Penn State secured the 3-1 victory.
West Virginia outshot PSU 14-13, while the Nittany Lions held an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal. Heredia-Beltran paced the WVU offensive efforts with four shots and the assist, while Respass scored the lone goal for the Mountaineers.
Michelle Rick is beginning her first season as the head coach at Robert Morris after being hired to lead the program in February 2024. RMU enters Sunday's match with a 1-2-1 overall record so far this season, coming off a 1-0 loss to Saint Francis on Aug. 29. Emerson Johngarlo and Paloma Swankler co-lead the Colonial's offense this season, each with a pair of goals for four points on the year.
