Thursday's match marks the 15th meeting all-time between West Virginia and Texas Tech, as WVU holds a 9-3-1 lead in the series. The Mountaineers and Red Raiders have not met since 2022, with conference realignment keeping Texas Tech off WVU's schedule in 2023. Before that, the two met in the regular season each year from 2012-22, while they have met three times in the Big 12 Tournament.
In the two teams' last meeting in 2022, WVU and Texas Tech played to a 1-1 draw on Sept. 22, 2022, in Lubbock. The Red Raiders got on the board first, but the Mountaineers responded just 21 seconds later to tie it up with a goal from Maya McCutcheon to force the draw.
Last time out, West Virginia secured a 2-0 win over Baylor at Betty Lou Mays Field in Waco, Texas, on Oct. 13. The win propelled the Mountaineers across the 400-win plateau, a mark they achieved in the program's 29th season. Sophomore defender Olivia Shertzer put the Mountaineers on the board in the 44th minute, scoring her first career goal, which eventually became her first career game winner. Senior forward Dilary Heredia-Beltran also added an insurance tally in the second half, her third score of the season.
Junior forward Ajanae Respass is pacing the WVU offense this season with six goals, four assists and 16 points. Fifth-year senior midfielder Lilly McCarthy is tied with Respass for the team lead in assists, while junior forward Taylor White is second on the squad in goals with five this season.
The reigning Big 12 Coach of the Year, Tom Stone is in his 18th season at the helm of the Texas Tech women's soccer program. The Red Raiders are 11-2-2 this season, including 6-0-2 in Big 12 play. They are coming off a 2-0 win over Iowa State on Oct. 13.
Peyton Parsons paces Texas Tech's offense with seven goals and 17 points so far this season. Goalkeeper Faith Nguyen has notched 32 saves and a 0.780 save percentage between the posts for Texas Tech this year.
