
Kansas State Sweeps West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team (6-9) was defeated by Kansas State on Wednesday, Sept. 27, in three sets with scores of 27-25, 25-19 and 25-20.
Junior outside hitter Hailey Green led the squad with 16 kills and 10 digs, followed by sophomore outside hitter Bailey Miller with 10 kills. Redshirt senior Lauren DeLo contributed 30 assists, while freshman middle blocker Emma Beretich put up four blocks.
West Virginia combined for 40 kills, 39 digs, 36 assists and four blocks.
The Mountaineers started the match off strong in set one, commanding a 7-4 lead over the Wildcats. Kansas State turned it around off West Virginia errors, making the score, 16-15. West Virginia tied the score later in the set three times, before the Cats pulled away for the 27-25 win.
West Virginia started off the second set hot, again and took the early 4-2 lead over Kansas State. It was a battle for the lead, with the score never being more than two points apart before the Cats stormed off on a five-point scoring run at the halfway point. The Mountaineers retaliated back with a kill from Miller, and a pair by Green. Kansas State capitalized on West Virginia errors and a kill by senior outside hitter Aliyah Carter, cementing set two, 25-19.
Set three looked to be promising for West Virginia. The Mountaineers went on a 7-0 run, with big-time kills by right side freshman Emma Winter, freshman middle blocker Maddy McGath and Miller. The Cats clapped back with a 3-point run of their own, taking the 12-9 lead. West Virginia cut the lead down to only three points, before Kansas State grabbed the final set, 25-20.
The Mountaineers stay at home for another matchup on Saturday, Sept. 30, facing off against Chicago State. First serve is set for 1 p.m. ET, at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown. Saturday is the Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer match, presented by WVU Medicine Children's Hospital. West Virginia will don gold shoelaces, courtesy of the Go4TheGoal Foundation and encourage fans to wear gold. Fans are invited to stay for postgame autographs immediately following the match on the concourse near the Gold Gate.
