MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's soccer team earned an at-large bid to the 2023 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship, the selection committee announced on Monday.
The Mountaineers claimed the No. 5 overall seed, the highest in program history. WVU earns a first-round bye in the tournament and will play the winner of a first-round matchup between Louisville and Dayton, on Sunday, Nov. 19, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. ET.
Tickets for Sunday's game will go on sale through the Mountaineer Ticket Office beginning Tuesday at 10 a.m. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for students and youth 12 and under and $3 for groups of 10 or more. WVU students will be admitted for free with a valid WVU Student I.D. Tickets can be purchased at WVUGAME.com or by calling 1-800-WVU GAME.
With the selection, the Mountaineers have qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the 16th time in program history, including the fourth time in the last six seasons. It also is the second straight NCAA appearance the Mountaineers earned a national seed, having earned the No. 11 slot in 2021.
WVU enters the tournament with a 14-2-4 record, just one win shy of matching a program record. The squad went 5-1-3 in the Sun Belt to finish third in the regular season before advancing to the Sun Belt Tournament final, falling to top overall seed Marshall. Of note, West Virginia is one of five Sun Belt teams to qualify for the NCAA Tournament.
Five Mountaineers earned All-Sun Belt honors as sophomore Marcus Caldeira and senior Yutaro Tsukada earned spots on the first team, while junior Frederik Jorgensen, senior Luke McCormick, and senior Jackson Lee earned second-team status. Tsukada, McCormick and senior Sergio Ors Navarro also earned spots on the Sun Belt All-Tournament Team.
The 48-team field is made up of champions from 23 conferences, who qualified automatically, in addition to 25 teams that were selected at-large. The top 16 teams were seeded and received first-round byes.
All first-round games will be played Thursday, Nov. 16, on campus sites, while all second-round action will take place Sunday, Nov. 19.
