October 06, 2022 11:19 PM | Women's Soccer
FORT WORTH, Texas – The West Virginia University women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw with No. 10 TCU at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium on Thursday night in Fort Worth, Texas.
The Horned Frogs scored first, taking a 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime, but the Mountaineers (4-3-6, 1-0-3 Big 12) capitalized on a TCU own goal in the 80th minute to equalize the match and finish in a draw. Fifth-year senior forward Lauren Segalla served an excellent ball into the box that was meant for sophomore forward Dilary Heredia-Beltran, but the Horned Frogs' attempted deflection went awry in favor of West Virginia.
From there, the two teams were desperate for a tie breaker, but neither team could find the back of the net, as WVU earned its sixth even result of the season.
On the defensive end, senior goalkeeper Kayza Massey was once again the star of the show, making a career-high tying seven saves, including six in the first half. The Ottawa, Ontario, native's athletic efforts helped West Virginia stay close throughout the match, eventually finishing with the draw.
The final stats showed TCU outshooting West Virginia 15-10 overall, but the Mountaineers claimed an 8-7 advantage in the second half. The Horned Frogs placed eight shots on goal, while WVU placed four on frame. TCU also bested the Mountaineers in corner kicks, 5-2.
Senior forward/defender Julianne Vallerand paced the West Virginia offense with three shots, one of which went on frame. Segalla, junior forward Chloe Adler and sophomore forward Aria Bilal also notched one shot on goal apiece in the match.
With the draw, the Mountaineers' lead in the series with TCU moves to 9-3-3, including a 3-1-2 mark in Fort Worth.
West Virginia now heads back home to begin its first two-game homestand of the Big 12 Conference season. The weekend begins with a matchup against No. 23 Texas on Thursday, Oct. 13. Kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is tabbed for 5 p.m. ET, and the match will have free admission for all fans.
