MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Despite going scoreless through the first 75 minutes of the match, the No. 22-ranked West Virginia University women's soccer team found its spark in the final 15 minutes to tally a 2-0 win over Duquesne at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown on Sunday afternoon.
The Mountaineers controlled most of the match but couldn't put the pieces together until the end of the game, scoring two quick goals in the final 15 minutes to earn the victory. With the win, West Virginia started the season 3-0, marking its best start since 2017 when it also went 3-0 to open the year.
Sophomore forward/defender Sophia Nickel was the hero once again, as she scored her third goal in as many matches to put WVU in the lead at the 76:31 mark. She received a well-serviced ball from redshirt sophomore forward Alexis Ré and dribbled around the Duquesne defenders to put it into the back of the net. Nickel leads the squad with three goals this season, all of which were game winners.
Just five minutes later, West Virginia earned a free kick just outside the top of the box at 81:30. Senior midfielder Anna Hauer's shot attempt was blocked by the Duquesne defenders, but redshirt junior defender Gianna Koss got on top of the rebound to add insurance to the Mountaineer lead with nine minutes to play. The goal marked Koss' first of the season and second of her career.
In the final stats, West Virginia outshot Duquesne, 13-3, and placed nine shots on goal compared to two for the Dukes. WVU also earned seven corner kicks on the day while holding Duquesne to zero. Eight different Mountaineers took a shot in the match, as senior defender Jacey Rase led the way with four shots and three on goal.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Bailey Herfurth and the WVU defense secured their second shutout of the season. The back line held Duquesne to just two shots on goal, both of which were saved by Herfurth. Of note, redshirt senior transfer Saige Wimes earned her first minutes of action for the Mountaineers on Sunday.
Up next, WVU prepares for its first road trip of the year, traveling to compete against Princeton on Thursday, Aug. 23. Kickoff at Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium in Princeton, New Jersey, is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
