Nickel Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After scoring a goal in each of the first three matches of the season, junior forward/defender Sophia Nickel of the West Virginia University women's soccer team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
Coming off the bench, Nickel has been the spark the Mountaineers needed in each of their three wins this season. She scored the first goal of the match in a 2-0 win over Dayton to start the season on Aug. 13, scored the go-ahead goal to top No. 23 Penn State on Aug. 20 and then scored a late goal to put West Virginia on the board in a 2-0 victory over Duquesne on Aug. 23. Each of her tallies were game winners.
With the scores, Nickel becomes the first Mountaineer to score in each of the first three matches since WVU joined the Big 12 in 2012. Additionally, her goals helped West Virginia notch its best start to a season since also going 3-0 to start the year in 2017.
Up next, WVU prepares for its first road trip of the year, traveling to compete against Princeton on Thursday, Aug. 23. Kickoff at Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium in Princeton, New Jersey, is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
