Sibley’s Late Goal Lifts WVU Over Virginia

Box Score MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior midfielder Isabella Sibley found the back of the net in the 86th minute to help the No. 4-ranked West Virginia University women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over No. 10 Virginia on Saturday afternoon at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown.

With under five minutes to play in regulation, the Uxbridge, England, native put the Mountaineers in front with an upper-90 flick from just outside the six-yard box. Freshman midfielder Lilly McCarthy and redshirt junior forward Lauren Segalla earned assists on the goal.

With the win, WVU recorded its second straight victory over a top-10 opponent and extended its streak of 10-win seasons to 21 consecutive years.

"That was a great performance," WVU coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "We started a little slow, but we found a way to win. I'm just so happy for (Sibley) and for this team that they could grind it out and find the win."

WVU (10-2) outshot the Cavaliers (10-4-1), 7-5, including 4-1 in shots on goal. Virginia held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The two teams combined for just one shot through the first 35 minutes of the contest. Then, sophomore midfielder Aaliyah Scott nearly scored with a shot from the top of the box, but it sailed wide in the 36th minute. That proved to be WVU's best chance at an opening goal in the first 45 minutes, as the defensive battle reached halftime scoreless.

In the second half, Segalla sent a cross into the box for Sibley, who struck it just high in the 55th minute. However, she wouldn't be denied later om, scoring the match's lone goal in the 86th to help the Mountaineers improve to 6-0 at home this season. The late goal marked Sibley's first career game-winner.

Sibley finished with two shots in the win, the lone Mountaineer to tally multiple shots on the day.

"I can't speak enough about how valuable she's been to our program," Izzo-Brown said of Sibley. "She works at every position. I tell her all the time that her work rate is a huge talent. There's just so much value in her versatility."

In all, six of the Mountaineers' seven total shots came in the second half. Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper Kayza Massey made one save and earned her second clean sheet of the campaign. She also improved to 7-1 between the posts in 2020-21.

West Virginia has now earned back-to-back wins over top-10 foes for the first time since Nov. 26-Dec. 2, 2016, against then-No 5. Duke (1-0) and then-No. 6 North Carolina (1-0). It also marked the first time the Mountaineers have earned multiple top-10 wins in a season since 2017.

Following Saturday's match, WVU improved to 4-11-2 all-time against Virginia. It was the first time West Virginia has topped the Cavaliers since Sept. 19, 2010.

Next up, the Mountaineers make the return trip to Virginia to take on the Cavaliers on Saturday, April 10, in Charlottesville. Kickoff of the squad's regular-season finale is set for 3 p.m.
