November 12, 2021 02:14 PM | Wrestling
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University wrestling team is set for its home opener against No. 17 Oklahoma inside the WVU Coliseum on Saturday, Nov. 13, at 2 p.m. ET.
Saturday's match is Dollar Day, with all tickets and select concession items available for just $1 each. The home opener has also been declared a Gold Rush and all fans are encouraged to wear gold to the dual. Finally, the first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a Gold shaker. Tickets are still on sale and admission is free to WVU students with a valid WVU Student ID.
"We are excited be back wrestling at home with fans," fourth-year coach Tim Flynn said. "I think for many years we took it for granted, so now we are really excited to see people in the stands."
WVU (0-0, 0-0 Big 12) faces OU (0-0, 0-0 Big 12) for the 13th time overall and 11th time since joining the Big 12 to start the 2012 season. West Virginia looks for its first victory over the Sooners since 2017-18, when the home team doubled up No. 18 Oklahoma 24-12 in Morgantown. The Sooners currently hold a 10-2 advantage in the all-time series; the Mountaineers won the first meeting between the two programs back in 1986.
"Oklahoma is a big challenge. Obviously, they are returning Big 12 champions. I think they are favored at eight or nine weights. It's a big mountain for us, and I think our guys are ready." Flynn explained. "I expect them (my team) to go out and get after it. Some guys (Sooners) are really highly ranked, so it's a big opportunity to make a name for themselves."
In the previous meeting, then-No. 19 Oklahoma took the bout by a score of 21-9 in Morgantown this year. Redshirt sophomore Anthony Carman and sophomore Peyton Hall collected wins over nationally ranked opponents in the loss. Carman captured a 7-6 decision over No. 31 Darrien Roberts in his second match of the day and Hall followed up with a 2-1 decision over No. 26 Jake Stiles.
Fans can catch all the action on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ as Alex Wiederspiel (PXP) and Tony Onorato (analyst) will be on the call. Additionally, live stats can be found on Trackwrestling throughout the dual.
The Mountaineers come off a second place showing at the Clarion Open last Sunday. West Virginia tallied 153.5 combined points, eight points shy of eventual Open champion Navy. Hall took home the crown at 165 pounds, as the Chester, West Virginia, native won five straight matches, including a major decision in the quarterfinals. Eight other Mountaineers joined Hall in the top six of their respective weight classes. Junior Scott Joll (174) took third, redshirt junior Alex Hornfeck (157) placed fourth, followed by sophomore Caleb Dowling (157) taking fifth, and redshirt sophomores Jeffrey Boyd (149), Carman (184), and Michael Wolfgram (HWT) secured sixth.
In the polls, redshirt senior Killian Cardinale moved up one spot in both rankings. He ranks No. 8 by InterMat and No. 9 by FloWrestling at 125 pounds. Winner of the Clarion Open at 165 pounds, Hall remains No. 14 on FloWrestling's list and No. 16 on InterMat's list. Fifth-year Luke Karam rounds out the group at No. 32 via InterMat.
Eight Sooners enter the dual ranked in their respective weight classes - 22/24 Joey Prata (125) – 10/9 Tony Madrigal (133) – 18/16 Mitch Moore (149) – 18/13 Justin Thomas (157) – HM/27 Anthony Mantanona (174) - HM/26 Roberts (184) - 6/9 Jake Woodley (197) - 17/22 Josh Heindselman (HWT). Madrigal was named the first Big 12 Wrestler of Week after winning the 133-pound weight division at the Michigan State Open, including two victories over other ranked wrestlers.
In accordance with the updated WVU policy effective Oct. 21, Mon. County Health Department and CDC guidelines, those who are not vaccinated will be expected to wear a mask properly above the nose while inside the WVU Coliseum with the exception of when eating and drinking.
As the Coliseum will return to normal operations WVU strongly encourages all fans to be vaccinated. A COVID-19 vaccination is the single-most important and successful tool to protect fans from the virus and its many variants. Increased vaccination rates, coupled with proven preventative measures such as masks, physical distancing, self-symptom monitoring, COVID-19 testing and good personal hygiene (e.g. hand washing and hand sanitizer), are the proven tools fans can use to fight COVID-19 and the spread of the disease to others.
All fans should self-evaluate prior to the event or before arriving at the WVU Coliseum. Fans who might be sick or experiencing COVID-19 symptoms should stay home and contact a physician. The athletics department, in conjunction with local, state and University officials will continue monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic and make changes to the WVU Coliseum protocols, if needed, based on current health conditions.
Next up, the Mountaineers head to North Carolina for a pair of weekend duals against Davidson on Friday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. ET, and No. 5 NC State on Sunday, Nov. 21, at 1 p.m. ET.
