MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior defender Jordan Brewster of the No. 9-ranked West Virginia women's soccer team has been named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference on Tuesday.
The reigning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, Brewster collects her third career Defensive Player of the Week nod, as well as her second of the season.
A native of North Canton, Ohio, Brewster helped WVU record its sixth shutout of the season, keeping Oklahoma off the board in a 2-0 win on Oct. 2. Along with the West Virginia backline, she held the Sooners to two total shots in the contest, only one on goal, and denied OU any corner kick opportunities. The performance marked the ninth time this season the Mountaineer defense has held an opponent to three shots or less and third time it has prevented a foe from creating corner kick opportunities.
Additionally, West Virginia (8-2-1) ranks No. 9 in this week's edition of the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Women's Top 25 National Poll, as announced on Tuesday. The ranking marks the Mountaineers' first inside the top 10 this season, as well as their highest since April 21, 2021, in the final regular-season rankings of the 2020-21 campaign.
Florida State (11-0) remains atop the national poll, while the rest of the top five also remains intact from last week. The Seminoles are followed by Virginia (10-1-1), UCLA (10-0-1), Duke (8-1-1) and North Carolina (8-1-2).
Also of note, a pair of Big 12 foes also are featured in this week's ranking, as TCU (9-2-1) comes in at No. 13 and Baylor (7-2-3) makes its season debut in the poll at No. 23.
The Mountaineers prepare for their first road trip of the Big 12 season, as they travel to Manhattan, Kansas, on Thursday, Oct. 7, to face Kansas State. Kickoff from KSU's Buser Family Park is tabbed for 8 p.m. ET.
