MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore defender Gabrielle Robinson of the No. 7-ranked West Virginia University women's soccer team has been named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Robinson tallied the game-winning assist in the Mountaineers' 2-1 victory over Baylor on Oct. 16, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown. The Springfield, Virginia, native connected with senior midfielder Stefany Ferrer-vanGinkel on a long through ball into the box in the 68th minute, resulting in a goal. It marked Robinson's first assist of the season.
Defensively, Robinson anchored a back line that allowed just three shots on goal and five total shot attempts to the Lady Bears.
The honor marks the first of Robinson's career. In all, WVU has now been recognized by the conference three weeks in a row with its weekly awards. Prior to Robinson's accolade, junior defender Jordan Brewster was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 6, before Ferrer-vanGinkel was the league's offensive player of the week honor on Oct. 13.
Robinson, who was named WVU's Defensive Player of the Year in 2019, is one of four Mountaineers to play in all 560 minutes so far this season. She also was named to the Women's Team of the Week by TopDrawerSoccer.com on Tuesday.
West Virginia (5-1, 5-1 Big 12) hits the road for a Friday, Oct. 23, contest at Oklahoma. Kickoff at John Crain Field in Norman, Oklahoma, is set for 8 p.m. ET. The match will be aired live on FOX Sports Oklahoma.
