MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior midfielder Stefany Ferrer-vanGinkel of the No. 9-ranked West Virginia University women's soccer team has been named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.
Ferrer-vanGinkel scored the game-winning goal in the Mountaineers' 2-1 win at Texas Tech on Oct. 9, at John Walker Soccer Complex in Lubbock, Texas. The Barcelona, Spain, native found the back of the net in the 82nd minute to help the squad improve to 4-1 on the season. The goal marked her team-leading third of the year and was her second game-winner this fall. She also led WVU with three shots on goal in the victory.
For the season, Ferrer-vanGinkel is tied for No. 2 in the nation in game-winning goals and No. 11 nationally in total goals. She is tied for No. 1 in the Big 12 in both categories.
The honor marks the first of Ferrer-vanGinkel's career, as she joins junior defender Jordan Brewster, who was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week last week, as WVU's 2020 weekly award recipients from the conference. Additionally, Ferrer-vanGinkel was included in the Women's Team of the Week by TopDrawerSoccer.com on Tuesday, marking the second time she was selected for the team this season.
West Virginia (4-1, 4-1 Big 12) returns home to take on Baylor on Friday, Oct. 16, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
