"This week has been about us and getting this inexperienced team better," Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "We need to eliminate mental mistakes and take care of the little things. (Stony Brook head coach Tobias Bischof) is definitely a coach that knows how to get results. He is going to have his team prepared to come out and do everything they can to disrupt us."
Thursday's match marks the first meeting between the Mountaineers and the Seawolves. Stony Brook is the 113th different opponent for WVU in its 24-year history.
West Virginia enters Thursday's contest with a 2-2-1 record after it battled back from an early deficit to force a 1-1 (2OT) draw against No. 8 Penn State (3-1-1) at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Friday, Sept. 6. Penn State jumped on the board first in the 30th minute to net in her first goal of the season and give PSU an early 1-0 lead.
After controlling possession from the start of the match, West Virginia finally broke through as sophomore forward Alina Stahl tied the match with a shot from just outside the 18-yard line that went into the top-right corner of the net just five minutes into the second half. The Mountaineers and Nittany Lions battled for the remainder of the second half and two overtimes, but neither could net a goal as the match ended in a tie.
Freshman defender Julianne Vallerand leads the Mountaineers with three goals in 2019, after registering her first career multi-goal game in WVU's 3-0 win over High Point on Aug. 30. Vallerand earned the first assist of her career against Penn State on Sept. 6.
Senior goalkeeper Rylee Foster is tied for third in the Big 12 in shutouts (2) and saves (14). She registered a season-high six saves against Penn State, while allowing just one goal.
Stony Brook enters Thursday's contest with a 4-2 record in 2019 after falling to Hofstra, 2-1, on Sunday, Sept. 8. Junior forward Alyssa Francese paces the Seawolves with three goals in 2019. All three of her goals have been game-winners. Junior goalkeeper Sofia Manner is the projected starter in goal for Stony Brook. She has a 4-2 record and has registered 27 saves and one shutout in 2019.
