MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 12 West Virginia University women's soccer team scored three goals in the final 14 minutes and the defense earned its second clean sheet of the season as WVU defeated High Point, 3-0, on Friday, Aug. 30, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in front of 1,846 fans.
The Mountaineers moved to 2-1 on the year with the win, while improving to 3-0 all-time against the Panthers. Freshman forward Julianne Vallerand scored a pair of goals in the match, while Addison Clark netted her first goal of the season.
Defense controlled the first half of the action, as the Mountaineers and Panthers were locked in a scoreless tie entering the intermission. WVU outshot High Point, 6-3, and put two shots on goal through the first 45 minutes.
The Mountaineer offense shook off the slow start, as it opened the second half with 12 shots in the first 25 minutes of play.
The hard work finally paid off for WVU in the 76th minute, as Vallerand took a pass from Enzi Broussard and ripped a shot from the left side of the box that found the far side of the net to give West Virginia a 1-0 advantage.
The goal marked Vallerand's second of the season after she scored in her gold and blue debut on August 23 against Duquesne. The score marked the first game-winning goal of her career. Broussard was credited with her first career assist for her efforts.
Clark doubled the lead for the Mountaineers in the 83rd minute as she headed a perfectly placed pass from freshman Aaliyah Scott past the Panther's netminder. The goal was the first of the season for Clark and the second of her career, while Scott earned her first career point after picking up the assist.
WVU added an insurance goal in the 84th minute as Vallerand capitalized on an excellent cross from Jessica Lisi and chipped the ball into the net to give WVU a 3-0 edge. Vallerand's second goal of the match pushed her total to a team-high three on the season.
Senior goalkeeper Rylee Foster recorded her 33rd career shutout as WVU's defense held High Point to a pair of shots on goal in the game. The shutout marks the second of the season for Foster and the WVU defense.
"We want to get on teams a little bit earlier than later, and obviously with such a young team, there's a lot we still have to learn and understand about the tempos of the game," Izzo-Brown continued. "We showed some character tonight. I was proud we were able to put three in the back of the net. But we have a huge game walking into Virginia."
The Mountaineers outshot the Panthers 22-5. WVU recorded 11 corner kicks in the contest while holding High Point to three. Both totals were season-highs for WVU.
