"It's always tough to play Baylor in Waco and come out with a win," Coach
Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "They are a very physical team that has a lot of experience returning. They are a successful team that knows how to win and we know that we have to be prepared for a tough match tomorrow."
Thursday's match marks the first time the Mountaineers and Bears have met since WVU captured its fourth Big 12 Conference Tournament title after knocking off then-No. 9 Baylor, 3-0, on Nov. 4, 2018. With the win, West Virginia avenged a 1-0 overtime loss to the Bears in the regular season at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown.
West Virginia is 6-1-1 all-time against Baylor and has outscored BU, 15-6, in the eight meetings.
WVU enters the contest with a 6-3-1 record in 2019 after the squad registered its third consecutive shutout in a 2-0 win over Iowa State on Thursday, Sept. 27. The Mountaineers netted their first goal in the ninth minute of the contest as senior midfielder
Jessica Lisi took a cross from classmate
Jade Gentile inside the box and snuck a ball inside the right post to give the Mountaineers an early, 1-0 lead. Junior midfielder Stefany Ferrar-vanGinkel doubled the lead in the 27th minute as she sent a header into the right side of the net to give WVU a 2-0 edge.
Senior goalkeeper
Rylee Foster moved into a tie with Lana Bannerman (2003-06) for No. 2 on the program's career shutouts list after registering her 36th-career clean sheet. Foster is second on the career shutouts list among active Division I players and leads the Big 12 with five shutouts this season.
Freshman forward
Julianne Vallerand leads the Mountaineers with 11 points (5 G, 1 A) this season. Sophomore
Alina Stahl and freshman
Nicole Payne are tied for second with three goals each in the 2019 campaign.
The Bears are 5-3-3 this season after splitting the first weekend of conference play with a 1-0 win over Kansas State on Sept. 26, before falling to No. 21 Kansas, 4-1, on Sept. 29. BU registered a season-high 26 shots, with 13 on goal, in the win over Kansas State.
Senior forward Camryn Wendlandt paces the Bears with eight points (3 G, 2 A) in 2019, while junior midfielder Ally Henderson leads the team with four assists. Junior Jennifer Wandt is the projected starter between the posts for BU. She has a record of 4-3-3 and is tied for third in the Big 12 with 37 saves.
Paul Jobson, the 2018 Big 12 Coach of the Year, is in his sixth season as the head coach of the Bears. He has an overall record of 81-42-17 at Baylor, including a 30-19-6 record in Big 12 play. Last season, Jobson led BU to its first Big 12 regular-season title since 1998 and its second consecutive Elite Eight appearance.
