February 09, 2018 03:22 PM | Women's Basketball
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Looking to end a three-game losing streak, the West Virginia women's basketball team heads to Lubbock, Texas, to face Texas Tech on Saturday in a 3 p.m. EST tip at United Supermarkets Arena.
Chuck Heinz and Craig Wells have the call on FOX Sports Southwest. Dan Zangrilli and Ayana Dunning will call the game for the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG. Due to conflict with coverage of the WVU men's basketball game, The Ticket: WMMN-95.7 FM/920 AM will air the game in its entirety, with 100.9 Jack-FM (WZST) joining the game following the men's basketball postgame show. The game will also be carried in its entirety on WVUSports.com and the Gameday App, with TuneIn joining the action in progress. Please check local listings for additional broadcast information.
TTU enters the contest on a five-game losing streak. Coincidentally, the Mountaineers' last win came on Jan. 24, 2018, against the Red Raiders in Morgantown. Led by 23 points from junior guard Katrina Pardee, WVU claimed an 82-52 victory at the WVU Coliseum. It was the largest margin of Big 12 victory by the Mountaineers this season.
"We shot the ball extremely well last time against Texas Tech, especially from the three," WVU coach Mike Carey said. "I'm sure they're going to make some adjustments. We've got to be able to control their inside game. Once again, they hurt us in the paint. We've got to be able to control that and get out and run. We forced a lot of turnovers last game, so we need to continue to do that so we can get some easy shots down the other end."
The Mountaineers are coming off a 73-55 loss to No. 6 Texas on Monday. Junior guard/forward Naomi Davenport led the team with 14 points, while senior forward Teana Muldrow had 10. WVU shot just over 31 percent – one of its lowest outputs of the season. However, five players each made at least one 3-pointer in the game, totaling 10 on the night.
WVU is shooting 36.9 percent from beyond the arc this season. However, in their last eight games, the Mountaineers have drilled 73 treys and are shooting 42.4 percent from downtown. They've limited opponents to just 42 triples at 32.6 percent in that time frame. Behind six triples from Pardee, WVU hit a season-high 13 3-pointers on Jan. 24 against Texas Tech. The Mountaineers have finished in double-digits from the perimeter four times this season – all coming in the past eight games (11 at OSU, 13 vs. TTU, 10 vs. Baylor and 10 vs. Texas).
The Mountaineers also went 7-for-10 at the free-throw line to shoot 70 percent against Texas on Monday evening. One game prior, WVU went 16-of-17 at the charity stripe at OU, shooting a season-best 94.1 percent at the charity stripe. The team has shot 80 percent or better at the free-throw line on six occasions and has shot better than 70 percent at the line six times in the last seven games. The Mountaineers are shooting 70.2 percent at the free-throw line this season.
WVU will face TTU for the second time this season and the 13th time overall. All 12 prior meetings have come in league play, with the series starting in 2013 after WVU joined the Big 12. West Virginia holds a 7-5 advantage after picking up a win earlier this year; however, the Mountaineers trail 2-3 in Lubbock. WVU has won five of the last six meetings, with TTU's lone win in that frame coming on Jan. 18, 2017, by a score of 75-66 in Lubbock.
Texas Tech enters Saturday's game with a 7-17 overall record and a 1-11 mark in Big 12 play. The Red Raiders are 6-9 at home and 0-6 at home in Big 12 play with their lone league win came Jan. 17 in a 68-56 triumph over Kansas State. Most recently, the Lady Raiders dropped an 83-69 loss to the Wildcats in Manhattan, Kansas.
TTU is averaging 63.5 points and 41.9 rebounds per game and shooting 41.6 percent overall, 26.2 percent from downtown and 54.9 percent at the free-throw line. Recee Caldwell averages a team-best 10.7 points per game, while Jada Terry and Brittany Brewer average 10.1 and 10.0 points per game, respectively. Terry also leads the rebounding effort with 6.3 boards per game, while Caldwell boasts a team-high 3.4 assists per game.
WVU returns to Morgantown for a two-game homestand that starts with Kansas on Wednesday. The Mountaineers will host the Jayhawks in a 7 p.m. EST tip at the WVU Coliseum.
