
West Virginia Tames Potent Oklahoma State Offense

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior guard Gia Cooke scored 21 points, and Kierra Wheeler added 18 to lead West Virginia to a 72–40 win over Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon at Hope Coliseum in Morgantown. The Mountaineers shot 51 percent from the field and hit 12 3-pointers while improving to 22–6 and 12–4 in Big 12 play.
The Mountaineers' defensive effort stifled the Big 12's best offensive team, limiting the Cowgirls to a season low 40 points. OSU this season has averaged 83.4 points per game.
Cooke went 7 of 15 from the floor and made five 3s, while Wheeler posted her seventh double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Jordan Harrison contributed 12 points, seven assists, and five steals for a WVU team that finished with 21 assists on 29 made field goals. The Mountaineers forced 16 turnovers and limited the Cowgirls to 23 percent shooting.
West Virginia opened the game on an 8–0 run behind Sydney Shaw and Cooke made 3-pointers and a fast-break layup from Harrison. The Mountaineers pushed the lead to 20–6 before OSU trimmed the deficit with late 3s from Micah Gray and Haleigh Timmer.
The Mountaineers built separation in the second with six 3-pointers in the period. Cooke and Shaw each hit twice from long range, and WVU used a 13–2 run to extend the lead to 40–23. Shaw's buzzer beater three 3 helped WVU take a 49–23 advantage into halftime.
West Virginia continued its command in the second half, outscoring Oklahoma State 23–17 after the break to close out a 72–40 victory. The Mountaineers' defensive pressure overwhelmed the Cowgirls, who managed just seven field goals across the final two quarters.
Cooke scored in double figures for the 24th time this season and eclipsed the 20-point mark for the seventh time. WVU controlled the paint, outscoring OSU 24-20 from the high percentage area and attached the glass with the most rebounds (46) in a conference game this season.
The Mountaineers close out their road schedule on Wednesday, Feb. 25, when they take on UCF inside Addition Financial Arena in Florida. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
