LUBBOCK, Texas (Feb. 10, 2018) – Four players finished in double figures as the West Virginia University women's basketball team got back to its winning ways with a 74-60 win over Texas Tech, on Saturday, at the United Supermarkets Arena, in Lubbock, Texas.
Junior guard Katrina Pardee finished with a game-high 19 points and five assists in the win, while senior forward Teana Muldrow and junior guard Naomi Davenport added 18 points each. Senior forward Kristina King added 10 more points, as well as 13 rebounds, to round out the team's balanced offensive performance.
The Mountaineers led by just six after three quarters but finished strong to outscore the Lady Raiders, 18-10, in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
"We were a little banged up coming into this game. (Senior guard Chania) Ray is a little banged up," WVU coach Mike Carey said. "I tried to keep her in there at the end of the game because she's a senior, and she finished off the game. I thought Katrina Pardee played well, played extremely hard. Teana played well but got in foul trouble, so I had to sit her out end of the third and most of the fourth. Then, Naomi Davenport showed up in the second half."
The Mountaineers (18-7, 6-7 Big 12) raced out to an early 8-2 lead, thanks in part by a pair of 3-pointers by Muldrow and Davenport. Moments later, Muldrow made another jumper and sank two free throws to extend the team's lead to 12-4 at the halfway point of the opening frame.
Then, back-to-back scores by freshman guard Ashley Jones made it a 17-7 game, before Pardee and Muldrow closed the quarter with two more buckets. The Mountaineers led, 22-13, after 10 minutes.
WVU led by as many as 13 in the second quarter, as Muldrow and King got layups to fall in the opening two-and-a-half minutes of the frame to build a double-digit lead. From there, though, Texas Tech (7-17, 1-12) closed the half on a 17-4 run to get back into the game. The Lady Raiders hit three 3-pointers in the final three-and-a-half minutes of the half to cut the Mountaineer lead to just 34-32 at the break.
In the second half, Pardee and King led the charge for WVU, as the two combined for the team's first nine points of the third quarter. Pardee's 3-pointer at the 5:33 mark of the third allowed the Mountaineers to retake the lead, 43-42, after Texas Tech captured one of its three early-third-quarter leads.
From there, Muldrow and Davenport each saw jumpers fall, which bumped WVU's advantage to 47-42, before a big trey by Pardee gave the Mountaineers a 52-46 lead with 1:35 to play in the frame.
In all, Pardee made three shots from beyond the arc for WVU in the win.
WVU closed the third quarter by making five of its final seven shots, but the host Lady Raiders wouldn't go away. Texas Tech made each of its final three shots in the third quarter to cut the Mountaineers' lead to just 56-50.
After Texas Tech got to within three of the lead at the 8:38 mark of the fourth quarter, WVU was able to pull away. First, Davenport scored to make it 60-55, before she nailed a 3-pointer and a layup to extend the lead to eight at 65-57. Then, Davenport pushed the Mountaineer advantage into double figures with a layup at the 4:18 mark, making it a 69-58 game.
The Cincinnati, Ohio, native took over in crunch time, scoring 11 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter.
