MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior forward Teana Muldrow notched her 11th double-double of the year as the West Virginia women's basketball team downed Kansas, 76-46, on Wednesday evening at the WVU Coliseum.
The win was the second straight for the Mountaineers, who move to 19-7 on the season and 7-7 in Big 12 plat. Kansas falls to 11-14 on the year and 2-12 in league action.
"Even though we won, I wasn't happy," WVU coach Mike Carey said. "Out of 40 minutes, I thought we did what we had to do defensively and offensively for about 15. We can't beat Oklahoma playing 15 minutes. We can't beat the rest of our schedule playing 15 minutes. They know what is in front of them. We need a couple more.
Muldrow scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed 11 boards, while junior guard/forward Naomi Davenport added 15 points and recorded six rebounds. Junior guard Katrina Pardee (13) also scored in double figures, and Chania Ray dished out a game-high nine assists, marking her eighth game this season with at least eight assists. She just missed a double-double with nine points as well.
The Mountaineers outscored the Jayhawks 22-16 in the paint, while also holding a 17-9 advantage in assists. WVU grabbed 30 defensive rebounds while holding Kansas to just 19 defensive boards. The 46 points by the Jayhawks marks the fewest points allowed by the Mountaineers in Big 12 play since WVU held Kansas State to 44 on Feb. 6, 2016.
Held scoreless across the first two minutes, the Mountaineers went on a 10-0 run as they led 10-2 with 6:10 remaining in the quarter. Following a Kansas timeout, Ray was fouled while taking attempting a trey and was able to knock down all three shots from the charity stripe to make extend the lead to 13. After two Kansas free throws, WVU would make its next five shots to give them a 22-4 edge at the media timeout. Muldrow knocked down her second 3-pointer of the day and freshman forward Destiny Harden added a free throw to give West Virginia a 29-12 lead at the end of the period. Muldrow led both teams with nine points at the break, while WVU's tenacious defense held the Jayhawks without a field goal for 7:44 in the first quarter.

Following the media timeout, Muldrow scored the final four points of the quarter for WVU, who was held without a point in the last 2:03 seconds of the quarter.
