Eight Named to Academic All-MAC Team

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Eight West Virginia University men's soccer players have been named to the Academic All-MAC Team, the Mid-American Conference announced on Wednesday.
Redshirt senior Joey Piatczyc, juniors Pascal Derwaritsch, Sebastian Garcia-Herreros, Ryan Kellogg, Logan Lucas and Ethan Shim and sophomores Kevin Morris and Tsubasa Takada were recognized on this year's team.
The eight accolades are WVU's second-most since joining the league in 2012 and the second-most among MAC teams honored in 2018. Garcia-Herreros, Kellogg and Lucas are recognized for the second consecutive season.
WVU's honorees helped the Mountaineers to a 14-7-0 season, a MAC regular-season title and an NCAA Tournament appearance. West Virginia concluded the 2018 season ranked in the top 25 in each of the major poll's final rankings, coming in as high as No. 17 by Soccer America.
To qualify for the Academic All-MAC Team, student-athletes must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of their team's contests.
An All-MAC Second Team honoree and named to the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-Region Second Team, Derwaritsch started all 21 matches for the Mountaineers in 2018. He was second on the team with six goals, 14 points and three game-winning goals, third with 13 shots on goal, fourth with 21 shots and 1,883 minutes played and had two assists. Derwaritsch is majoring in sport management.
Garcia-Herreros was named to the MAC All-Tournament Team and started all 21 matches. He led team with 1,895 minutes played, was second with seven assists and had four shots, one on goal. Garcia-Herreros is majoring in civil engineering.
Kellogg also was named to the All-MAC Second Team and the Scholar All-Region Second Team. He played in 20 matches with 16 starts, was third on the team with two game-winning goals, fourth with four goals and 10 points and had two assists, 19 shots and eight shots on goal in 1,559 minutes. Kellogg is majoring in finance and has a 3.80 GPA.
Lucas is an MAC All-Tournament Team honoree. He started all 21 matches and was fifth on the team with 1,865 minutes played, had one goal, two assists, four points, 10 shots and four shots on goal. Lucas is majoring in global supply chain management.
Morris started all 21 matches, was third on the team with 1,889 minutes played, fourth with one game-winning goal, fifth with 20 shots and had three goals, three assists and nine points with eight shots on goal. He is majoring in mathematics.
Piatczyc earned All-America Third Team honors from United Soccer Coaches and was named the MAC Player of the Year. He ranked No. 7 nationally with 0.56 assists per game and 10 total assists, No. 11 with five game-winning goals, No. 27 in points per game (1.44) and No. 29 in total points (26). Piatczyc's five game-winning goals tied a WVU single-season record, his 0.56 assists per game rank No. 5 all-time and his 10 game-winning points and 10 assists are both tied for No. 6 in team history. He earned his bachelor's degree in multidisciplinary studies and is pursuing a master's degree in communication studies.
Shim played in all 21 matches with 13 starts and had three goals, two assists, eight points, 13 shots and nine shots on goal in 917 minutes played. He is majoring in exercise physiology.
Takada played in 17 matches with 15 starts, was third on the team with 28 shots, fourth with 12 shots on goal and had one goal, four assists and six points in 1,076 minutes. He is majoring in pre-sport management.
