September 16, 2017 10:47 PM | Men's Soccer
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore Albert Andres-Llop scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to lead the No. 19 West Virginia University men's soccer team to a 3-2 win at George Mason on Saturday night.
Andres-Llop tied the game at 2-2 with 99 seconds remaining in the match before scoring the game-winner 97 seconds into overtime. The goals were his second and third of the season after he scored one in his freshman campaign.
"That was a good team we played against in George Mason that hadn't lost at home yet this year," WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. "They're a very good attacking team. But our kids were unbelievably resilient. We kept fighting, literally to the last second of the game and got a great free kick to win it in overtime.
The Mountaineers (4-1-2) tied the match twice, in the 18th minute and again in the 89th before winning it. The Patriots (3-2-1) took an early 1-0 lead in the ninth minute and regained a 2-1 advantage in the 79th minute.
Andres-Llop's golden goal came at 91:37 on a free kick into the bottom left corner of the net. The score came from the near side, 20 yards out.
The Mountaineers sent it to overtime thanks to Andres-Llop's first goal at 88:21 that tied the match at 2-2. Senior Louis Thomas sent the ball to sophomore Sebastian Garcia-Herreros, who dribbled into the corner and crossed the ball to Andres-Llop. He then tapped the ball in from two yards out.
WVU's first goal came at 17:15, courtesy of sophomore Pascal Derwaritsch. Off a free kick from Andres-Llop, Derwaritsch headed it in just inside the near post. The second goal of his WVU career tied the match at 1-1.
West Virginia had 10 shots to Mason's nine, while junior goalkeeper Stephen Banick made three saves in the win. Both teams had five shots on goal.
Mason had the game's first chance in the third minute on a breakaway, but the shot hit the post.
Freshman Kevin Morris had the Mountaineers' first shot, in the eighth minute, but it went wide.
A minute later, the Patriots took a 1-0 lead on Tunde Akinlosotu's first goal of the season. The shot came from 15 yards out and bent into the upper right corner of the net.
Nine minutes later though, Derwaritsch made it a 1-1 game, at 17:15.
George Mason had a chance in the 34th minute off a free kick from outside the corner of the box, but the header from the right side went wide.
In the second half, Banick made a punch save in the 58th minute on a ball in on a tight angle from the far corner. WVU cleared the ensuing corner kick to prevent another opportunity. Eight minutes later, junior Jorge Quintanilla had a shot from 20 yards out, but the chance was saved to keep it a 1-1 contest.
The Patriots regained their one-goal advantage at 78:40, when Alain Sargeant headed the ball in from five yards out into the left side of the net. The goal, which was assisted by Henning Dirks, came after a corner kick and two shots by the Mountaineers.
Less than 30 seconds later, Quintanilla had a chance, but the shot from just outside the box went high. Garcia-Herreros also had a chance go high before Andres-Llop tied it in the 89th minute.
The overtime period began with a foul on George Mason, which Andres-Llop converted into the game-winning goal.
The Mountaineers conclude a three-game trip to the Washington, D.C. area on Tuesday, Sept. 19, at American. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET, at Reeves Field.
