MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women’s soccer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown announced today that defender Grace Smith has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Mountaineers this fall.
A native of Bridgnorth, England, Smith has been involved with the English Youth National Teams since 2016 and is currently a member of the English Women’s National U-19 Team.
“We are very excited to welcome Grace into our West Virginia University women’s soccer family,” Izzo-Brown said. “Grace has played in some big-time matches, including the 2016 U-17 Women’s World Cup, and her experience on the international stage will be invaluable. She brings enthusiasm, commitment and a great work ethic with her to Morgantown, and she will help our program continue to win championships.”
Most recently, Smith competed with the U-19 squad at the 2017 La Manga Tournament in Spain.
Alongside fellow 2017 Mountaineer signee Lois Joel, Smith helped England advance to the quarterfinals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Jordan 2016, where the squad lost to eventual-winner Japan. She also led the team to a third-place finish at the 2016 U-17 European Championships and to a 3-1 win against Serbia in the 2016 U-17 European Elite Qualifying Round. Additionally, she participated with the U-17 squad at the 2016 U.S. Tournament against the United States, Korea and Japan and in a friendly match against Germany.
A member of Aston Villa, she and the squad recently finished second at the U-17 Girls’ Football Association Cup.
A graduate of King Edwards VI College in Stourbridge, England, Smith previously attended Oldbury Wells School, where she led the squad to the Shropshire County title as a team captain.
The daughter of Richard and Sarah Smith, Grace will enroll in undergraduate studies.
