MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomores Sh’Nia Gordon and Easther Mayi Kith were named the Big 12 Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, this morning.
Additionally, the Mountaineers (16-1-1, 8-0) are ranked No. 1 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com for the fourth straight week and fifth time this season. Additionally, the team is No. 2 in this week’s NCAA RPI.
Today’s weekly awards are the first career honors for Gordon, a forward and native of Ocklawaha, Florida, and Mayi Kith, a center back and native of Quebec City, Quebec. WVU finished with a conference-best nine weekly awards this season.
Gordon’s honor follows her game-winning performance in the team’s 3-0 victory over Oklahoma State on Oct. 28, as she broke scoreless play in the 49th minute with her fourth goal of the season. The game-winner was her first of the year. Gordon ranks third on the team with 10 points (4 G, 2 A).
Mayi Kith’s recognition comes on the heels of her shutdown defensive outing against OSU, as she denied Cowgirl forward Courtney Dike, the conference’s leading point earner and goal scorer, a shot. The shutout was WVU’s eighth straight in conference play; no Big 12 opponent scored a goal on the Mountaineers this season. The team shows 12 clean sheets on the year and needs three to match the program record.
South Carolina (17-0-1, 11-0 SEC) again ranks No. 2 in the TDS.com Poll, while Stanford (16-1-1, 9-1 Pac-12) is No. 3. USC (14-3-1, 8-1-1 Pac-12) is No. 4, and BYU (15-2-1, 5-1-1 WCC) is No. 5.
Notre Dame (13-2-4, 7-1-2 ACC) checks in at No. 6 and is followed by Florida (13-4, 8-3 SEC) at No. 7. Connecticut (16-2-1, 7-0-1 AAC) sits at No. 8, and North Carolina (12-3-3, 6-2-2 ACC) and Clemson (13-3-3, 7-1-2 ACC) round out the top 10.
The Cardinal continue to hold the top spot in the NCAA RPI. South Carolina follows WVU at No. 3, while USC is No. 4 and Notre Dame is No. 5. Clemson follows at No. 6, with BYU at No. 7 and Florida at No. 8. Oklahoma (12-5-2, 4-3-1) and Georgetown (14-2-2, 5-1-2 Big East) round out the top 10.
The five-time reigning Big 12 Conference regular-season champion Mountaineers travel this afternoon to Kansas City for the 2016 Big 12 Soccer Championship. Top-seeded WVU opens play against No. 8-seed Texas Tech on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 12:30 p.m. ET, at Swope Soccer Village.
