Mountaineers Fall at Virginia Tech, 2-0

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team dropped a 2-0 match at Virginia Tech on Tuesday evening.
The Mountaineers (4-6-0) saw their two match winning streak come to an end as they played the second of three matches in the span of seven days. The Hokies (5-4-1) held WVU scoreless despite six shots on goal for the Mountaineers.
“Soccer is a cruel game, they had three shots and scored on two of them,” WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “We had some great chances, unfortunately we just didn’t connect when we needed to connect. I thought we played well for long stretches of the game and carried much of it, but they caught us twice on counter attacks. That’s the way soccer goes sometimes. We got caught on the counter and unfortunately weren’t able to come up with the result tonight.”
West Virginia had 13 shots in the match, six on goal. Virginia Tech registered seven shots, three on net.
Four WVU shots on goal came in the first half, and two in the second. All three of Virginia Tech’s shots on goal occurred after intermission.
Senior Jamie Merriam had two shots on goal, both within the first eight minutes of each half. Sophomores Jack Driscoll and Jad Arslan and freshman Tucker Stephenson also had a first-half shot on goal. Junior Jack Elliott posted a shot on goal after intermission.
In goal for the Mountaineers, freshman Alec Boerner made his fourth consecutive start. He allowed two goals and had one save in 71 minutes before junior Daniel Diaz came in and played the final 19 minutes.
After a scoreless first half, Virginia Tech scored its first goal at 56:49. Som Essome scored on a cross from nine yards out on a header into the bottom right corner.
The Hokies took a 2-0 lead at 67:04. Reece Alexander dribbled around Boerner just inside the box and scored into the far side.
WVU returns home to host Western Michigan on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The third match in seven days for the Mountaineers, it marks the beginning of Mid-American Conference play.
