Two Late Goals Upend WVU

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (October 24 2015) – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team lost a 2-0 match at Bowling Green on Saturday afternoon at Cochrane Stadium.
The Mountaineers (6-9-0, 1-2-0 Mid-American Conference) allowed two goals in the final 20 minutes, as the Falcons (7-7-1, 1-2-0 MAC) scored in the 71st and 77th minutes. BGSU’s second goal came on a penalty kick.
The match was WVU’s final regular season road contest of the season. The Mountaineers return home for the last three home games of the season. The homestand begins against No. 5 Akron on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m., at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
WVU recorded 12 shots in the match, four on goal. BGSU had 16 shots, with seven on net. Sophomore Jad Arslan had two of WVU’s shots on goal, while sophomore Joey Piatczyc and senior Haydon Bennett each had one.
In goal for the Mountaineers, freshman Alec Boerner made four saves and gave up one goal, before he was issued a red card in the 77th minute that led to the Falcon’s second goal. Junior Daniel Diaz came in and played the final 14 minutes and had one save and allowed a goal, on the penalty kick that followed Boerner’s card.
Bowling Green took a 1-0 lead at 70:09 on a goal by Danny Shea on a long ball from past midfield. Shea’s ball bounced off of Boerner’s hands 10 yards out on the left side and bounced into the net.
Five minutes later, WVU nearly tied the match thanks to Arslan. From three yards out, Arslan had two shots, the first was saved by the Falcon keeper and the second, off the rebound, was blocked by the BGSU defenders for a team save.
On its next possession, BGSU took a 2-0 lead, on a penalty kick by Jacob Roth at 76:09. He earned the penalty kick after he was taken down by Boerner on a tackle inside the 18. Boerner was issued a red card on the play.
In the 11th minute, Boerner made a great save on a BGSU shot to keep it a scoreless game. Boerner was on the ground in the center of the net, but made a nice kick save to prevent a Falcon score.
WVU’s first shot on goal of the game came in the 18th minute on a header by Bennett, but BGSU’s Ryan Heuton made the save.
In the 33rd minute, Piatczyc had a chance on a strike from 20 yards out, but the Bowling Green keeper made a nice save to tip the ball out and over the net.
At the half, WVU had five shots, two on goal, while Bowling Green had eight shots, three on goal.
West Virginia had seven shots in the second half to Bowling Green’s eight. The Mountaineers had two shots on goal and the Falcons had four.
