HOUSTON, Texas – Un-bee-lee-vable! It was another supposedly insurmountable obstacle for Coach Don Nehlen's squad. TCU had speed to burn and was set to leave West Virginia gasping for thin air. But it was the Mountaineers who turned on the afterburners en route to a 31-14 conquest over the Horned Frogs in the 1984 Bluebonnet Bowl.
The large TCU contingent – among the 43,260 fans in the Astrodome this evening – were dazzled by a balanced offensive display and aerial shell-shocking unheard of in the Southwest Conference. The pass-happy Mountaineers threw by, around and over the Horned Frogs, for a total of 302 yards passing. The first-up Mountaineers gobbled up another 200 yards rushing.
TCU's vaunted wishbone, which had chewed up ground at a record pace, churned and sputtered out only 92 yards rushing thanks to a stellar Mountaineer defensive effort. All-America halfback Kenneth Davis netted a mere 19 yards before leaving the game following a bone-crushing tackle by Mountaineer linebacker Matt Smith.
West Virginia rolled up more than 500 yards of total offense and scored from everywhere on the field. John Gay and John Holifield ran for two short scores, while Kevin White – named the game's MVP – found Ron Wolfley with a five-yard scoring strike and Gary Mullen with a picture-perfect 62-yard bomb for six. Paul Woodside added four PAT's and a chip-shot field goal.
Willie Drewrey sparkled while leading the WVU receiving corp with six catches for 152 yards. In all, eight Mountaineer receivers became successful Kevin White targets as West Virginia won its third bowl game in four seasons.
