Matthew Stainthorpe joined the WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics in August 2021, where he serves as an Assistant Director of Athletic Communications/Operations and the primary contact for the WVU wrestling team.Â
Â
He will also assume the duties of directing and coordinating game day operations for football and men’s and women’s basketball games, distributing game credentials and media parking passes, managing ticket trade agreements with radio, television, newspaper and billboard outlets, and serving as the department’s primary administrator for memorabilia requests.Â

Born in Philadelphia and raised in the suburb of Cheltenham, Pennsylvania, Stainthorpe remained in-state to earn his bachelor’s degree in communications from Penn State University as well as his Master of Public Administration (sports management) from West Chester University. Â

During and after obtaining his degrees, Stainthorpe spent 12 years filling a variety of sports-related roles. He recently served two months (June-August) as tennis director for Camp Watitoh Summer Camp in the Berkshires of Becket, Massachusetts prior to his current role at West Virginia University.Â

Stainthorpe spent six years inside athletic communications offices, which included stops at WCU as a graduate assistant (2014-2016), Temple University and La Salle University simultaneously in the role of communications assistant (2016-2017), and Missouri Southern State University as the assistant athletic media relations director (2017-2019).

Throughout the other six years and beyond, he covered professional, college, and high school sports for radio stations (97.5 the Fanatic, WBCB 1490AM, WFYL 1180AM, and State College’s ESPN 1450AM), live event and streaming networks (Sports Fan Base Network and Penn State Athletics), and a non-profit sports commission (Joplin Sports Authority), while contributing to the game of tennis by working at a club, clinic, or camp (Fossler’s Cheltenham Tennis Center, TopSpin Tennis/Penn State Abington, and LifeSeeds Summer Camp).

He currently resides in Morgantown and enjoys hitting the gym, watching retro/classic movies and television shows, supporting all Philadelphia professional and college sports teams, and checking out restaurants in his on-going search for the best chicken fingers and french fries combo in the world during his free time.Â
