West Virginia and Marshall to Meet for Mountain State Derby

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 21 West Virginia University men's soccer team hits the road for the 32nd edition of the Mountain State Derby when it takes on Marshall on Sunday evening. Kickoff from Hoops Family Field in Huntington is set for 7:15 p.m.

The Mountaineers have won four straight contests, most recently a 1-0 victory over Duquesne on Tuesday. Sophomore Sammie Walker had the game-winning goal in the 85th minute while sophomore Harry Hogben collected the assist.

Redshirt sophomore Toby Mawer recorded his third consecutive clean sheet and has now gone 324 minutes without conceding a goal, the fourth-longest active streak in the nation. Only Lehigh (467), California Baptist (384), and Columbia (374) have longer active runs.

Senior Pablo Pozos leads the team with four goals and 10 points this season with sophomore Julen Recalde tallying two goals and five points. Junior Isaac Scheer leads the team with three assists.

West Virginia is coming off 13-5-3 season and their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance. In the Sun Belt Preseason Coaches Poll, WVU was picked to win the league, the first time the Mountaineers are preseason favorites since 2022.

Pozos was named the 2026 Sun Belt Preseason Offensive Player of the Year after tallying 11 goals and three assists in his first season with the Mountaineers. Junior midfielders Isaac Scheer and Nacho Martinez joined Pozos on the Preseason All-Conference Team.

The Mountaineers return 15 players from last year's squad while adding 15 newcomers. Six players join WVU out of the transfer portal while there are nine first-year college players.

Marshall is 4-1-2 this season and are coming off a 2-1 win over Eastern Illinois. In the Sun Belt Preseason Coaches Poll, Marshall was picked second, just behind WVU.

Joshua Nugent leads the squad with four goals this season while Yurij Olbert has made 17 saves in goal while recording one shutout.
