Mountaineers Open Sun Belt Play With Win Over Georgia State

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Sept. 17, 2026) – The West Virginia University men's soccer team opened Sun Belt action with a 1-0 victory over Georgia State, Thursday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers improve to 4-1-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the Sun Belt while the Panthers fall to 5-2-1 and 0-1-0 in conference play. As the only Sun Belt game on the night, WVU currently sits atop the table.

The only goal of the night came on an own goal by Georgia State in the 81^st minute. West Virginia earned one of its 12 corner kicks and as the ball sailed toward the box, a Panther defender got a head on it, but it went straight into his own net.

The Mountaineers outshot GSU, 10-1, including 6-0 in shots on goal. The Panthers did not muster a shot until the 87^thminute and it was the first time WVU did not allow a shot on goal since beating UCF on Sept. 28, 2025.

Senior Pablo Pozos and sophomore Sammie Walker each had two shots on goal to lead the squad. The best chance for Pozos came in the 49^th minute while Walker's best opportunity came in the 72^nd minute, but both shots were turned away by the Georgia State keeper. Sophomore Julen Recalde also had a great chance in the 65^th minute, but his shot was knocked away by a Panther defender.

Goalkeeper Toby Mawer and the Mountaineer defense earned its third shutout of the season, and second consecutive, while not having to make a save.

The Mountaineers will be back in action on Tuesday, September 22, against Duquesne. Kickoff from Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
