MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A late goal propelled the No. 21 West Virginia University men's soccer team to victory over Duquesne, 1-0, Tuesday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers improve to 5-1-1 while the Dukes suffer their first loss of the season and fall to 4-1-2.

Sophomore Sammie Walker had the game-winning goal in the 85^th minute, his second of the season. Sophomore Harry Hogben had the assist, his first of the year. Duquesne came into the game as the nation's top defense, having allowed just two goals in its first six games.

Overall, the Mountaineers outshot the Dukes, 16-5, and had a 5-1 edge in shots on goal. WVU also had an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

West Virginia had an early chance in the 4^th minute as senior Pablo Pozos took a close-range shot, but it was turned away by Duquesne goalkeeper Sam Coss. Pozos had another opportunity in the 42^nd minute off a corner, but his header went wide.

In the second half, the Mountaineers had two shots hit the crossbar, one by junior Isaac Scheer in the 61^st minute and another by Pozos in the 63^rd minute. The best chance for WVU came in the 80^th minute as sophomore Julen Recalde took two shots that got past the keeper but on both occasions, a Duquesne defender was there to knock it off the line.

Finally, in the 85^th minute, Hogben dribbled the ball up the field and crossed the ball on the ground toward the box. A Dukes defender got a foot on it but could not clear it as the ball went to Walker, who fired a shot into the side netting as he fell to the ground.

Duquesne had one last chance on a corner with 30 seconds left. The Dukes managed to get three shots off, including one that was cleared off the line by junior defender Civan de Jesus Ferreira and another that was taken by the goalkeeper Coss. Their final shot went wide which allowed the clock to run out.

The Mountaineers return to Sun Belt action on Sunday against Marshall for the Mountain State Derby. Kickoff from Hoops Family Field in Huntington is set for 7:15 p.m.
