
No. 19 WVU Beats No. 23 Wyoming, Best Start in Conference Since Joining Big 12

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 19 West Virginia University wrestling team defeated No. 23 Wyoming, 21-15, at the Beauty and the Beast meet on Saturday at Hope Coliseum in Morgantown.
West Virginia (9-3, 4-1 Big 12) is off to its best start against Big 12 opponents since joining the conference in 2012.
The Mountaineers split the first six bouts with the Cowboys, with wins coming at 141, 157 and 174 pounds.
Redshirt senior Jordan Titus (141) began the day for West Virginia against David Saenz. Titus utilized an impressive first period to roll past Saenz, winning by decision, 10-4.
The next victory for the Mountaineers came in the 157-pound bout as redshirt sophomore No. 4 Ty Watters defeated Jared Hill by technical fall, 18-3.
Watters scored two takedowns in the opening period, including a three-point nearfall to lead, 9-1. Three more takedowns locked up the match for Watters. He improved to 16-1 overall and 5-1 against Big 12 opponents.
A major decision for Wyoming in the 165-pound bout tied the match at 8-8.
In his dual debut, freshman Michael Baldwin rallied late against No. 28 Riley Davis to win, 3-2. Thanks to a takedown in the final seconds, Baldwin earned his first career victory over a ranked opponent.
Wyoming responded with another win by decision to tie the match at 11-11.
The Mountaineers would go on to win three of the final four bouts to secure their second consecutive win over a ranked opponent.
In the final match up, freshman No. 17 Gunner Andrick faced No. 28 Luke Willochell at 133 pounds.
After the first period, Andrick trailed, 3-2. A reversal put Andrick in the lead before an escape by Willochell tied it at 4-4 in the second period.
In the final period, Andrick grappled with Willochell for two minutes and secured the riding time point to lock up the match for West Virginia.
This marks just the second win in the series for the Mountaineers and their first against the Cowboys since 2020.
