January 20, 2026 03:46 PM | Men's Basketball
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia begins its two-game Arizona swing on Wednesday night when it faces Arizona State at Desert Financial Arena.
The Sun Devils are currently 10-8 overall and 1-4 in Big 12 play, but show victories over Texas, Washington State, Oklahoma and Kansas State, as well as competitive losses to Colorado and arch-rival Arizona.
Fiery coach Bobby Hurley's team is averaging 80.4 points per game and has scored at least 73 points in 17 of the 18 games they have played so far this season.
Arizona State's lowest scoring output was 63 points in a 12-point loss to Gonzaga.
Senior guard Moe Odom, a 6-foot-2 Pepperdine transfer, is tops on the team in scoring with an average of 16.3 points per game. He tallied a season-high 36 in the Texas win and recently had 23 in a narrow loss to No. 1-ranked Arizona.
Massamba Diop, a 7-foot-1 freshman center from Senegal, is averaging 14.2 points and 5.6 rebounds per contest and recently produced three consecutive 20-point outings against Colorado, BYU and Kansas State.
Those two are Arizona State's primary inside-outside scoring threats in the starting lineup.
Anthony Johnson, a 6-foot-2 senior guard who averaged nearly 24 points per game last year at NAIA University of Cumberlands, is providing 14.2 points per game coming off the bench.
Santiago Trouet, a 6-foot-11 sophomore forward from Argentina, provides additional size in the paint to go along with 7.6 points and 5.6 boards per game.
West Virginia is playing its first game in the Grand Canyon State since losing to Xavier in the 2008 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 in Phoenix.
West Virginia and Arizona State met last year in Morgantown, with the Sun Devils coming away with a 65-57 victory.
Hurley has faced West Virginia once prior when he was coaching at Buffalo. The Mountaineers defeated his Bulls in the first round of the 2015 NCAA Tournament in Columbus, Ohio.
Meanwhile, the Mountaineers' Honor Huff continues to rank among the NCAA's 3-point shooting leaders. The senior is third in the country with 68 triples and needs just 19 more to crack the top 50 all-time in NCAA history.
The Brooklyn, N.Y., resident now shows 360 in 121 career games.
Huff is averaging a team-best 17.1 points per game.
West Virginia (12-6, 3-2) ranks sixth in the country in scoring defense this week allowing only 63.1 points per game.
Wednesday night's game will tip off at 9 p.m. ET and will be televised nationally on Peacock (Pete Sousa and Matt Muehlbach).
Mountaineer Sports Network radio coverage with Tony Caridi, Brad Howe and David Kahn will tip things off at 8 p.m. on stations throughout West Virginia, online via WVUsports.com and the Varsity Network and WVU Gameday apps.
West Virginia will remain in Arizona to face top-ranked Arizona on Saturday afternoon in Tucson. That game will tip off at 2 p.m. ET and will be televised nationally on CBS.
