Mountaineers Fall to BYU in Big 12 Tournament Second-Round Action
March 11, 2026 09:24 PM | Men's Basketball
West Virginia won the battle of tempos, but BYU won the game as the Cougars defeated West Virginia 68-48 in the second night of Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship play at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City.
BYU, which scored 105 points in last night's 14-point victory over Kansas State, capitalized on 22 West Virginia turnovers and never trailed after Aj Dybantsa's basket gave it a 13-11 lead.
The Cougars got the margin to 11 on Robert Wright III's 3-pointer and led 31-23 at halftime.
In the second half, West Virginia got a Brenen Lorient 3 and a Jasper Floyd jumper to pull within three, 43-40, with 9:36 remaining before going ice cold.
A Chance Moore jumper with 8:03 to go reduced BYU's lead to 47-42 but saw things slip away over the next three minutes. Wright III, Dybantsa and Kennard Davis Jr. combined for 10 points to push the lead to 15.
West Virginia's lone field goal over the final 8:03 came on Floyd's layup with 1:59 remaining.
Dybantsa led all scorers with 27 points after coming off a Big 12 Tournament record 40-point performance last night. The presumptive first pick in this summer's NBA Draft made 11 of 24 from the floor, five of six from the free throw line and also grabbed seven rebounds.
Davis Jr. chipped in with 20 on seven-of-11 shooting.
BYU, beaten badly on the boards 11 days ago in its loss to West Virginia in Morgantown, outrebounded the Mountaineers 35 to 30 - 16 of those coming on the offensive end.
WVU's 22 turnovers resulted in 22 BYU points.
"I thought they were the most physical team today," West Virginia coach Ross Hodge said afterward. "Obviously, we turned the ball over entirely too much and felt pretty fortunate to be down just eight at the half, considering we had 14 turnovers. I felt like our defense held up well enough when we didn't throw them the ball and we just didn't play well enough to beat a quality opponent at this time of the year."
Honor Huff led West Virginia with 17 points while Lorient tallied 11.
Tonight's loss drops the Mountaineers' record to 18-14 with the two most likely postseason options now being the College Basketball Crown in Las Vegas or the NIT.
BYU, now 22-10, advances to tomorrow night's quarterfinal game against second-seeded Houston.
