MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Honor Huff scored 24 points in his final regular season home game at Hope Coliseum on Friday night to lead West Virginia to a 77-62 victory over UCF and a season sweep of the Knights.
Huff was part of a 14-person Senior Night celebration that included players, student managers and an athletic trainer prior to tonight's game.
"I just told the group that I'm incredibly thankful for them and super-happy for them and their parents tonight," said West Virginia coach Ross Hodge, who has led the team to just its second non-losing mark in league play in the last five seasons. "They'll never forget Senior Night winning and singing (Take Me Home) Country Roads together in an incredible environment."
Huff's game-high scoring total included four 3s, which gives him 398 for his collegiate career and moves him within 12 of cracking the NCAA's top 25 all-time.
He was a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line.
The Mountaineers' other double-digit scorers were also seniors: Brenen Lorient with 14, Chance Moore with 13 and Jasper Floyd with 10.
The free throw line was West Virginia's friend tonight with three more makes than UCF's 18 attempts.
West Virginia (18-13 overall and 9-9 in Big 12 play) led for all but 26 seconds of the game, including its largest lead of 17 points with 33 seconds remaining.
UCF pulled to within four points with 12:03 left on Themus Fulks' layup, but the Mountaineers responded with a 15-4 run over the next three minutes to take control of the game.
Huff began the run with three free throws, hit a 3 and added three more from the line to tally nine of the 15.
WVU held the Knights to just 38.1% shooting and a season-low 62 points.
UCF (20-10 and 9-9) came into tonight's game ranked 44th in the country averaging 83 points per game and was coming off a 104-point performance against Oklahoma State earlier this week.
Fulks and Riley Kugel led the Knights with 16 points each.
The Mountaineers have now won five of six in the brief series against UCF, including all three here in Morgantown.
An announced crowd of 11,312 watched tonight's contest.
WVU is now 11-2 in its last 13 Senior Day games.
With the victory, West Virginia will finish no worse than eighth in the conference standings in Hodge's first season at the helm, meaning a first-round bye in next week's Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City.
WVU was predicted to finish 11th in the Big 12's preseason media poll.
"When I've talked to (his team) the last couple of days, for them to have things go really negative – whether that's in a game or for an entire game – and then to still have the resolve and the resiliency to scrape themselves off the mat, stay together and stay the course and not blame anybody but just say, 'We've got to do better …' you can be hurt, and it should hurt, but you can't wallow in self-pity."
And they didn't this evening.
The conference will announce pairings for next week 's tournament following the conclusion of tomorrow night's games.
