Mountaineers to Make Third Visit to Houston Since 2024

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia has little time to celebrate its 86-75 victory over 22nd-ranked Kansas with Houston looming on Tuesday night.
The Cougars are coming off a 77-55 victory over Baylor to bump its record to 15-1 overall and 3-0 in Big 12 play. Houston's other league wins were at Cincinnati (67-60) and against 14th-ranked Texas Tech (69-65).
Defense is once again the Cougars' calling card. They rank second in the country in scoring defense allowing just 60 points per game and Houston has given up more than 70 points just four times this year, once coming against Tennessee on Nov. 25.
That's Houston's lone loss this season.
The Cougars also rank 23rd in field goal percentage defense allowing their opponents to shoot just 39.1%, 27th in turnovers forced at 15.5 per game, and 39th in 3-point field goal percentage defense permitting teams to shoot just 29.7%.
That's noteworthy because West Virginia's Honor Huff, this week's reigning Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, is poised to crack the NCAA's all-time top 75 in 30-point field goals.
The senior guard made 10 3-pointers last week to move into 84th place all-time with 356. He can move up nine more spots with three more.
Huff is currently second in the country with 64 3-pointers after leading the nation in that category last year at Chattanooga with 131.
You can bet Houston will put extra emphasis on defending Huff after his 23-point performance in last Saturday's win over Kansas. For the season, he's averaging 17.5 points per game.
Senior guard Chance Moore (12.5 ppg.) and senior forward Brenen Lorient (10.6 ppg.) have been the team's two most consistent complementary scorers, but senior guard Treysen Eaglestaff is beginning to find his shooting stroke.
His late 3 put West Virginia ahead for good in the Cincinnati win llast Tuesday night and he's averaging a solid 12.7 points and shooting 41.6% from 3 over his last four games.
West Virginia (11-5, 2-1) is also stout defensively permitting only 62.3 points per game.
The Mountaineers will be making their third trip to the Fertitta Center over the last three years, losing twice.
Overall, Houston owns a 3-0 advantage in the series which began when the Cougars joined the Big 12 Conference prior to the 2023-24 season.
The game will tip off at 8:30 p.m. and will be televised nationally on FS1 (Jason Benetti and Bill Raftery).
Mountaineer Sports Network radio coverage with Tony Caridi, Brad Howe and David Kahn begins at 7:30 p.m. on stations throughout West Virginia, online via WVUsports.com and the Varsity Network and WVU Gameday apps.
