Mountaineers Travel to High Point for NCAA Second Round

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's soccer team travels to High Point, Sunday, Nov. 23, to take on the No. 10-seed Panthers in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Kickoff from Vert Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m.

The Mountaineers advanced by defeating St. John's, 4-3, in the first round at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. WVU had to rally from a 2-0 second-half deficit, getting a hat trick from senior Marcus Caldeira, including the game-winner in the first overtime period. Graduate student Nicolas Scargle added his first goal of the season. Senior Ethan Dekel Daks had two assists while sophomore Isaac Scheer and junior Pablo Pozos each had one.
Overall, West Virginia sits at 13-4-3 this season. The Mountaineers took home numerous Sun Belt postseason awards with Caldeira claiming Sun Belt Player and Offensive Player of the Year. Caldeira and Pozos were both named to the All-Sun Belt First Team while graduate student Carlos Hernando, senior Felix Ewald, and sophomore Nacho Martinez earned spots on the second team. Juan Alvarez and Sammie Walker rounded out the honors by being named to the All-Freshman team.
The Mountaineers have a dangerous attack as they are 16th in the nation with 2.15 goals per contest while averaging 7.30 shots on goal per game, seventh in the country. For the second consecutive season, WVU entered the NCAA Tournament leading the nation in corner kicks per game, averaging 7.89 per match.
Caldeira and Pozos are both top 20 in the nation in goals scored with 13 and 11, respectively. Caldeira is seventh in points with 33 and leads all active players who have played exclusively in Division I with 41 career goals and 97 career points.
High Point is led by seventh-year head coach Zach Haines, who is 78-30-19 during his time with the Panthers. HPU is 13-1-4 this season and earned the No. 10 national seed for the NCAA Tournament. Earlier this season, High Point and WVU played to a 2-2 draw in Morgantown.
The Panthers swept the Big South postseason awards with Daniel Lugo (Offensive and Newcomer), Jefferson Amaya (Midfielder), Lukas Kamrath (Defensive), Josh Caron (Goalkeeper) all Prosper Adagani (Freshman) all taking home top honors.
