
WVU Continues NCAA Tournament Play at No. 2-Seed Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No. 16-ranked and No. 7-seed West Virginia University women's soccer team continues NCAA Tournament action when it faces No. 10-ranked and No. 2-seed Georgetown in the Second Round on Thursday, Nov. 20. Kickoff at the Hoyas' Shaw Field in Washington, D.C., is slated for 5 p.m. ET.
The contest will be streamed live on ESPN+, with Christian Taylor and Alex Bair on the call. Live stats also are available at NCAA.com.
West Virginia continues its 24th NCAA Tournament appearance on Thursday. The Mountaineers have appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 24 of the last 26 seasons, including a 21-year streak from 2000-20. This year, WVU earned its second straight at-large bid after also earning one last season. WVU is 24-20-6 all-time in NCAA Tournament action. The Mountaineers have earned an NCAA Tournament bid eight times since 2015, including four trips to the Third Round during that span.
Thursday's match marks the 27th meeting between West Virginia and Georgetown, as well as the first since 2022. West Virginia is 16-7-3 all-time against the Hoyas. In the two teams' last matchup on Sept. 17, 2022, Georgetown secured a 2-0 win in Washington D.C. Thursday's contest marks their second meeting all time in the NCAA Tournament, with the first coming on Nov.16, 2019. The matchup resulted in a 2-0 win for the Mountaineers in the First Round over then-No. 25 Georgetown. Of note, WVU is 9-4 all-time at Shaw Field against Georgetown.
In the First Round of the NCAA Tournament, West Virginia secured a dominant, 5-0 win over Wagner in Morgantown on Nov. 14. The Mountaineers used goals from three different scorers to earn the victory, as junior forward Abbey Olexa and sophomore forward Alicia Riggins tallied two goals apiece. Anna Hauer opened the scoring, tallying the game-winning goal with a penalty kick in just the first minute of the contest. West Virginia dominated the stat sheet from top to bottom, recording season highs with 34 shots and 18 shots on goal.
Georgetown is coached by Dave Nolan who is in his 22nd year at the helm at Georgetown. Nolan has led his team to 14 straight NCAA tournament appearances, along with two College Cup semifinal appearances in 2016 and 2018. Georgetown finished the regular season 15-3-2 overall and went undefeated in Big East play at 10-0. The Hoyas defeated Sacred Heart 3-0 in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 14, earning Nolan's 300th career win as head coach of the Hoyas.
