
Mountaineers Play Host to NCAA First Round Match Against Wagner

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 16-ranked and No. 7-seed West Virginia University women's soccer team is set to play host to Wagner in the First Round of the 2025 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament on Friday, Nov. 14. Kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown is slated for 7 p.m. ET.
Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance by visiting WVUGAME.com or calling 1-800-WVU-GAME. Tickets for the First Round are $15. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the gate on game day.
Friday's match will be streamed live on ESPN+, with Nick Farrell and Adam Zundell on the call. Live stats also are available at NCAA.com.
West Virginia is set to make its 24th NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 26 seasons in 2025. WVU earned its second straight at-large bid after also earning it in 2024. The Mountaineers earned the Big 12 Conference's automatic bid in 2022 as the Big 12 Tournament champions. WVU is 23-20-6 all-time in NCAA Tournament action. West Virginia has earned an NCAA Tournament bid eight times since 2015, including four trips to the Third Round during that span.
The Mountaineers' most recent trip to the NCAA Tournament was in 2024, as the squad earned its first at-large bid since 2020. WVU played to a 1-1 draw with No. 5-seed Kentucky in double overtime in the First Round on Nov. 15. After a penalty shootout to decide the advancing team, the Wildcats advanced to the Second Round by a 4-2 count.
Friday's matchup marks the first-ever meeting between West Virginia and Wagner. The Seahawks are set to become the Mountaineers' 127th different opponent all time. Wagner is the fourth new opponent for West Virginia this season after it faced Akron, Army and Utah during the regular season. The Mountaineers topped Akron and Army with a pair of 3-0 wins at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium, while WVU tied Utah, 1-1, in Salt Lake City. Over the last seven years, WVU is 11-3-3 against first-time opponents.
Last time out, West Virginia fell to Kansas, 4-0, in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Soccer Tournament in Fort Worth, Texas, on Nov. 3. The Jayhawks added a score in the first half and then three more in the second half to top the Mountaineers in the quarterfinals for the second straight season. The loss marked the first for West Virginia since August 24, as well as the first against a Big 12 opponent this season, ending WVU's 15-match unbeaten streak.
Phil Casella is in his ninth season as the coach at Wagner and has led the team to an 11-2-6 record this year. The Seahawks earned the NEC's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament after winning the program's first NEC Championship with a 2-1 over CCSU on Nov. 9. Izzy Gomez leads the Seahawks' offense so far this season with eight goals and 18 points. In goal, Abigail Marcello has registered 34 saves on the year.
