Mountaineers Down Wheeling University in Exhibition Play on Sunday
October 26, 2025 06:13 PM | Men's Basketball
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Harlan Obioha's 19 points and eight rebounds powered West Virginia to an 80-54 exhibition game victory over Wheeling University Sunday afternoon at Hope Coliseum.
Obioha, the tallest player on the floor, made eight of his nine field goal attempts and handed out two assists for new coach Ross Hodge's Mountaineers.
"It was good to be out here in front of the fans at Hope Coliseum," Hodge said afterward. "I thought we defended pretty well for large stretches of the game; we took them deep into the shot clock on numerous possessions and were pretty solid for the most part.
"I wasn't crazy with the way we came out of the halftime, and that was probably the most frustrating part of the game because we talked about that specifically. In our closed-door scrimmage (against Maryland) I didn't think we started the first four minutes out of halftime great in that one either," he said.
West Virginia, which used accurate 3-point shooting to win a closed scrimmage against Maryland last Saturday, made just six of 20 from behind the arc today.
Three of those came late in the game from freshman guard Jayden Forsythe, who finished with nine points.
Backcourt starters Honor Huff and Treysen Eaglestaff went a combined three of 14 from behind the arc.
"I'm sure everybody has heard by now we made 20 3s in our closed door scrimmage," Hodge said. "You are not always going to do that, and we had good looks. As a matter of fact, I think Honor may have used all of his bullets in the 3-point contest the other night at Ballin' at Woodburn, but he had good looks and Trey had good looks, and those are go in more often than they did tonight."
Overall, the Mountaineers converted 28 of 55 from the floor for 50.9% for the game. Forward Brenen Lorient contributed 14 points on seven of nine shooting as the only other WVU player to reach double figures.
West Virginia never trailed and led by as many as 30 points with 3:39 left in the game.
Wheeling University, coached by West Virginia University graduate Chris Richardson, got nine points apiece from Ayden Goll and Kris English.
The Cardinals shot 33.3% from the floor and turned the ball over 16 times for the game.
"I thought we did a good job of taking advantage of what our advantage was, which was our interior play," Hodge said. "I think that's what you will see with this team where we can create some situations where teams are going to have to pick how they choose to defend us."
West Virginia opens its regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 4, against Mount St. Mary's at Hope Coliseum. The Mountaineers posted a 23-13 record last season playing in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference under second year coach Donny Lind.
The season opener will tip off at 7 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN+.
