Thursday's contest marks the 11th meeting all-time between West Virginia and James Madison. The Mountaineers hold an 8-1-1 advantage in the all-time series, including a 4-0-1 lead in games played in Morgantown. WVU and JMU first met on Aug. 18, 1999, with the Dukes securing a 1-0 win over West Virginia in Harrisonburg. The two teams most recently met on Sept. 16, 2021, also in Harrisonburg, and WVU tallied a 2-1 victory over the Dukes.
West Virginia is coming off a 2-0 win over Robert Morris on Sept. 1, in Morgantown. The Mountaineers found the back of the net in the third minute of the first half and the eighth minute of the second half to tally the two-goal win over the Colonials. Senior forward
Dilary Heredia-Beltran scored the eventual game winner in the first frame, while junior forward
Taylor White added her third tally of the year at the 52:22 mark in the second.
Junior forward
Ajanae Respass was credited with an assist on both goals, while fifth-year senior midfielder
Lilly McCarthy also assisted on Heredia-Beltran's score. The Mountaineer defense was stellar against the Colonials, keeping Robert Morris off the stat sheet completely on the way to its third shutout of the season.
White leads the team with three goals on the year, while Respass paces WVU with three assists. White and Respass are tied for the team lead with seven points, while Heredia-Beltran leads the pack with two game-winning goals. In the Big 12 Conference, Respass ranks second in the league in total assists and fourth in assists per game (0.60).
JMU is led by seventh-year head coach Joshua Walters, who led the Dukes to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in eight years, as well as the first of his tenure, in 2023. JMU enters Thursday's nonconference matchup with a 1-2-2 record so far this season after falling to No. 7 Virginia 3-0 on Sept. 1.
James Madison's offensive efforts are led by Ariana Reyes and Sophia Verrecchia with two goals apiece, while three different players have posted two assists so far this year. In goal, Sofia DeCerb has notched 27 saves and a 0.750 save percentage between the posts this season.
